Chapter 2

Beep....Beep....Beep.

The machines beeped as always showing she was still alive. It was always the first thing that greeted Daniel for the past four weeks whenever he came to visit. Not that it annoyed him but it would have been great to see her awake.

So far no one had shown up to see her despite the adverts they had made. It was like she was all alone in the world. Checking the police station, she matched no missing reports. The police had questioned him the night of the accident and he'd been so sure he would be sleeping behind bars. It turns out he was wrong, he wasn't  the only one who'd lost control of his car on the slippery road. They'd recorded other accidents on the same stretch of road that evening. It had been an eventful night.

He sat down taking her hand as he bowed his head in prayer, 'Lord as I come before you again committing her into your hands I thank you for the gift of another day with life in her. Please touch her with your healing hand, in the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

Every time he visited, he prayed for her. It was a routine of his now as he visited daily to check on her in the morning before going to work and in the evening after work. Needless to say on his sister's birthday he spent half of the day in the hospital. So much planning had gone into a birthday that he disrupted by running over someone.

He left for work shortly after. He worked as a mechanic with his own shop and two guys who helped him on a part time basis as they were still students. He loved his job, as it provided him with enough to earn his upkeep. But coming home 'covered in dirty oil' as his mom loved to say was a bit extreme for the woman but that was all she complained about concerning his job. He loved his mother even with her very sharp criticisms.

Surprisingly she hadn't criticised him after the accident but just prayed with him as the woman he had hit was in surgery and even after the doctor had announced that she had slipped into a coma, she still supported with prayers.

"Good morning" he greeted his young helpers who were getting ready for hopefully a busy day.

"Morning Dan" they replied

The first job of the day was to change the oil of a Toyota Calyx. Work went on smoothly till he got a call; she woke up a nurse said.

If he could dance he would have danced right there in front of his shop instead he just breathed a prayer of thanks getting into his car and called his mom who picked on the first ring just after the first beep that signalled his call was being connected.

That was weird, it was as if she had been expecting his call
"Mom she woke up!" he said excitedly into the phone.

"Praise God! Is she alright?" His mom asked.

"I don't know but I'm on my way to the hospital. I'll let you know when I get there"

"Okay I'll be..."

"You better keep me in the loop too!" his sister's voice came over the phone.

His mom laughed, "Well you heard her, keep her in, you do not want to deal with a pregnant angry woman"

"Yes mom" he said suddenly feeling like a little boy.

"God be with you my dear"

"Thanks mom" he ended the call. He rushed to the hospital leaving his workers in charge. Finally he was going to breathe easy and sleep peacefully at night.

Thank you Lord.

A man walked into the room minutes after the doctor left. He had a bushy hair with a beard and was in dark blue overalls that framed a lean body plus some brown work boots that seemed to have seen better days. She stared at him as he came to stand by the bed. He didn't look familiar. And he looked like he didn't want to be there, like he came because he was forced to.

Stopping by the bed, "Hi" he coughed.

"Hi?" she said in an uncertain voice.

"My name is Daniel Asamoah" he said.

She looked at him, "The doctor said I was in an accident. Were you the one who found me?" she asked.

"I um.. I was the one who run you.... I mean I caused the accident. You were standing in the middle of...." he stopped abruptly.

Her hand went to her head that felt like it was being pounded.
"Do you need the doctor?" he asked already halfway to the door.

"No, its fine now" her eyes trailed to her bandaged left leg and left arm. She didn't feel any hair on her head except for the soft bandage on it meaning likely her whole head had been bandaged.

"Do you have any relatives you want me to call for you?" the man she now knew was Daniel asked.

"I don't know"

'You don't want me to call them for you?'

She looked at him, "I don't know if I have relatives"

"What does that mean?" Daniel sounded frustrated more than she felt.

"I can't remember" she said quietly.

"You can't remember them? What about family members?"
She opened her mouth to answer but he beat her to it.

"Forget that. You can't remember" he paced before coming back to stand by the bed. "Do you remember your name?"

"No, I can't remember" she told him. "I woke up and found myself here"

Daniel ran his hand on his face. She looked at him, he looked more frustrated than she was.
A nurse entered announcing it was time for her to take her drugs.

"I'll be outside" Daniel muttered excusing himself.
He came back minutes later. "May I?" he gestured to the chair by the bed.

She nodded looking at him warily from where she was propped up into a slightly sitting position.

He sat down staring at the IV tube running from her hand to the stand.

"You caused the accident?" she asked him breaking the thick silence in the room.

"Yes and No" he said after hesitating, still unable to meet her stare. Silence fell around them.

She chose to break it, "Could you tell me how it happened?"

He raised his head to look at her. "It was raining, I saw you a little late standing in the middle of the road just at a curve. I applied the brakes but it didn't work and you ended up here"
He had said that so simply.
She cleared her throat, "W...What was I doing in the middle of the road?"

"I wouldn't know. Maybe you wanted to be hit by a car, you know as a suicide" Daniel said bluntly staring at the ground.

A gasp escaped her as she stared at the man speechless.

Had she been there to commit suicide' she asked herself but got nothing. She had no idea what she had been doing on the street. She couldn't remember, all she got was a blank sheet. She couldn't even remember what street it was.

"I'm sorry I didn't mean to put it that way" he started back tracking, realizing what he had said. "What I meant to say was there could be many reasons why you were there. Like you could have been waiting for someone.... I'll just be outside" he dashed out of the room as though there was a fire.
