Chapter Twelve
We all laid down on our backs, staring up at the stars.
"Yeah. Adam technically started this whole thing," Danny explains.
"No. It was definitely Tanya," Adam laughs.
Tanya looks over at me. "You see, Adam and I dated a bit freshman year, but things didn't work out that well and we broke up after four months. We were still friends and, after a while, we started coming into the school on weekends. It was my idea, but Adam started the whole stargazing thing." she explains.
I look at the two and nod. I could picture them together easily.
"Uh, why didn't things work out?" I ask.
Adam scoffs and so does Tanya.
"Don't even get them started," Danny groans. "They fought all the time over the most useless crap."
"We really did. But, Adam's a good kisser, so it was an okay deal," Tanya laughs.
"Oh, are you?" I tease.
He laughs. "I wouldn't say-"
"Oh, hell yeah you are," Tanya yells, scaring me a little.
These people weren't afraid of anything. I really kind of like that.
"Um, so how did Danny get into this stuff?" I ask.
"We met him last year. Tanya liked him because he seemed especially gay. We didn't actually know he was until he told us," Adam explains.
"So, why haven't you come out of the closet yet?" I ask Danny.
"Too much attention comes behind it," he sighs, "Plus, everyone practically knows it already."
I nod and smile at him. "Well, I think it's cool."
"You'd be the first," he smirks.
I laugh and look back up at the stars.
"Have you guys ever really searched for constellations?" I ask.
"Not really," Tanya shrugs, "It's just pretty."
"Tanya's a photography nerd. She loves this shit." Adam says.
"Watch the language!" Danny snaps.
I can't help but laugh obnoxiously. Tanya ends up joining in, too, but the guys just look at us like we're crazy. A short silence falls upon us.
"So...Justin Blake." Danny says so softly that I can barely hear it, breaking the cheery mood.
"Um, yeah. Pretty depressing, right?" Tanya says, not exactly as a question.
"Nobody seems to care," I say casually.
"Well, we do," Adam says and I can feel his eyes fall on me.
"You guys don't know him like I do. He was a great guy and everyone's just beginning to forget about him. It sucks," I say.
"It really does," Danny says.
"So...what's the whole story between you two?" Adam asks me.
I sigh and feel tears stinging the corners of my eyes.
"Sit back. This is a long story," I begin.
