Chapter Five

I watch Mary head towards the car. Our conversation was unusually short and it wouldn't have existed if she wasn't so talkative when she first got into the car.

When we reach the party, Mary smiles and touches my hand lightly.

"Are you sure you don't wanna' come, sweetie?" she asks.

"Yeah," I say and look past her towards the idiotic kids jumping off the roof of the house into the pool.

"It's going to be horrible without you." she pouts.

"I'm sorry. I'm just not up for it," I say softly, looking down at the keys in the ignition.

"Is this because of Justin? You guys barely talked. I'm surprised it's worrying you this much," she says, "The only time I saw you together was at Adam's party two weeks ago."

"Yeah. I know. But I just...it's just really depressing, don't you think?" I say, bending the truth a bit.

"I know what you mean. He was a cool guy," she says and scratches the back of her neck, "but I heard on Monday the teachers aren't giving out any assignments."

"You know, you're taking this completely the wrong way, Mary." I snap, "His death isn't a free ticket to no homework. He was my...friend. And I miss him like hell, Mary. So please, shut up and enjoy your drunken party."

Mary is left speechless.

She smiles at me politely and gets out of the car and heads off towards the party.

As soon as she steps out of the car, I speed off, tears blurring my vision a bit.

This is what people thought of Justin's death. Cool parties and a free day at school. The rest of us, like me, we're left to sulk and become depressed.

It just wasn't fair.
