Rifts
Time rifts happen when something in the past "changes" affecting the future. These are complicated events and that's why these are invisible to most people.
But there are exemptions. For some reason, some people see rifts. These people, see-ers, as some of them refer to themselves, only see rifts once or twice and most just shrug it off as their imagination or trick of the mind. There are rare cases wherein the see-er sees rifts regularly. These people then realize that they are actually "seeing" something unnatural.
Such was the case for Dylan.
Nobody heeds him any attention because he is already weird as he is. He mostly keeps to himself and had only one really close friend, Gil. They both work as graphic artists for Metro P. Magazine.
