A/N: This takes place in my home town, Carlsbad, NM. So Google Maps it so you're not confused.
---------------------It's been a year since Lauren and Ashton took Y/N to the behavioral specialist, she was selectively mute, still is. The only person she talks to is still Ashton, and Lauren over Face Time while she's off at college. Ashton and Y/N are together, have been since the day of the appointment. Y/N had four electives this year, she passed Junior year because of Ashton. She had the option to take a fourth science course, but she knew what she wanted to do after graduation and it had nothing to do with science, so as the bell rang, signaling the end of her piano class, she gathered her things and walked to the gym, smiling when she saw Ashton already in her practice uniform. Y/N tried out for the basketball team, but the head coach turned her away because of her condition. Yeah, she'd talk to Lauren and Ashton, but they had to be alone, so Y/N just had BPA, piano, and two hours of athletic training. She already knew how to sing, she could sing in front of people, but if she had to talk, you'd be better off asking a dog to do the talking for her. She could play guitar, and the ukulele, and the drums, she was now learning piano, so she was on the track she wanted to be on. As she set her bag down, she jumped as a loud voice sounded off in her ear, looking to her left to see a girl she didn't recognize until Ashton came over and hugged her, saying the name of Y/N's best friend since second grade that moved away in seventh grade. Smiling, Y/N hugged the barely recognizable girl and sighed when she was asked why she wasn't talking and hugged Ashton's arm, her head resting on her shoulder as Ashton spoke to their old friend for her.
"She had a rough year last year, a whole bunch of bullshit happened and she became selectively mute, she only talks to me and Lauren."
"Lauren? How is she?" She asks and Y/N gives her a thumbs up, using her other hand to stroke Ashton's bicep with her thumb to calm the basketball player down because she knows how tense and pissed off she gets when she has to explain why Y/N was mute. Y/N drops her hand back to hold Ashton's again and smiles when Ashton kisses her head, silently thanking her.
"I gotta go practice, babe, you'll be okay?" Ashton nods and Y/N nods.

After the training room had emptied, Y/N sat on the side of the basketball court, watching the team practice as she waited for Ashton to finish practice so they could go on the date they had planned. That and Ashton picked her up this morning, so she had to wait. She was too lazy to walk, plus she liked being in the car with her girlfriend, who sits and listens to Y/N as she empties her mind of what she's wanted to say through the day, but wasn't able to. Most of what she thought on any given day was how frustrating it is to be mute, how stupid people could be, assuming she was stupid for not being able to talk to people. But she was also grateful for the people she had around her who understood the shit she went through the previous year and stood up for her when she couldn't, though she didn't really feel it to be necessary, if they wanted to be jerks about it and call her stupid, they'd eat their words in five months when she graduated as valedictorian. Yeah, from ineligible to valedictorian in less than a year, she spent her summer between this year and the previous year making up the credits she needed, which, truthfully wasn't that hard, the only hard part was not getting distracted. Because more often than not, when Y/N was working on her credits, it was after their soccer practice, Y/N was managing again, and Ashton was goalie, a rule their soccer coach had was that all seniors were placed on Varsity, so Ashton was backup Varsity goalie. Y/N was manager, and Y/N found it hard to stay focused because Ashton usually showered at Y/N's house and changed while Y/N was focused on fighting with and cussing out math. And at Y/N's place, Ashton didn't wear a shirt, well, she did, for five minutes. Then it came off and every time Y/N went to look away from the screen of her laptop, Ashton would scold her and threaten to leave. So as valedictorian, Y/N didn't really see the whole her friends defending her necessary, because the people who picked on her were bound to be in the 200 or lower range of her class, so she wasn't really worried, the only time she deemed the being stood up for situation necessary was when her ex would try to start shit. Ooh, how she wanted to give that girl a piece of her mind when she called her a retarded baby for not being able to talk, and when she spoke about Ashton...well, she's just lucky she had friends holding her back so she couldn't do anything to her ex.
