As Luke heard the words, he took a step back from Lorelai in surprise. "Wh- what did you just say?" he asked cautiously, keeping her at an arm's length away.
"Luke, I'm so sorry to blurt it out like this! This is so not the way I wanted to tell you this! And now Rory's going to be so mad at me because I didn't even think to set up on FaceTime first - she wanted to see the whole conversation and your reaction and now I can't even do that like I promised her..." Lorelai chattered on and on without even taking a breath. And then she paused, taking Luke's hand in hers, and she drew in a deep breath and sighed. "But LUKE, isn't it exciting!? I'm ACTUALLY pregnant after all this time we thought it would never happen for us!" she whispered, with an enormous smile spread across her face.
He stared at her blankly for a moment. "Pregnant...?" he finally asked quietly, as if that was the only word she'd said that had registered in his mind. Lorelai nodded happily and watched his reaction carefully. "That's... That's just... WOW, I think I need to go lie down" he said, walking inside, leaving Lorelai behind with her mouth hung open wide as she watched him leave.
Lorelai's excitement faded as she realized that her biggest fears about telling Luke appeared to be becoming a reality. "He's not even a little happy" she whispered, a single hot tear slipping down her cheek.
Lane didn't know what to do or say. "Lorelai, I'm so sorry..." she whispered.
Lorelai nodded and wiped the tear from her cheek. "Yeah, me too... Me too" she whispered with a sniffle, but still trying to act unbroken.
*********
It had already been a few hours since Lorelai had gotten home, and with the exception of her beloved dog, Paul Anka, she was all alone in the house she shared with Luke. He had made up an elaborate excuse of why the diner was having some big emergency, which of course was causing him to need to leave the house within less than ten minutes of her walking through the door.
Rather than stay comfort his newly pregnant wife and deal with the reality that he was going to be a father again, he freaked out. He had just up and disappeared like some irresponsible teenager - and he hadn't been heard from since.
To say that Lorelai was crushed, would be an enormous understatement. She was devastated - cuddled up on the bed they shared, in her favorite puppy dog pajamas, wrapped in a warm blanket, and watching TV - well, at least she would be, if only compulsively flipping through channels was in fact the same thing as actually watching TV. She was gorging on coffee-flavored chocolate caramels that she had brought home from Vegas and she was crying harder than she wanted to ever admit to anyone. All this time, she had wanted nothing more than to have a family with the man she's loved for so long. She thought she was unable to conceive because they had been trying for years without getting pregnant, that's why she wanted to consider surrogacy because nothing would have made her happier than to raise a new baby with the man of her dreams - but he clearly had other plans of how he thought their lives would be like, now that they were married. And with one fell swoop, their entire lives changed, everything was turned upside down, just like that.
**********
Lorelai woke up abruptly, not even realizing she'd ever fallen asleep, to some loud banging sounds ringing throughout the house. She turned over, hoping Luke had snuck into bed and was beside her, but he wasn't there. She continued to hear the banging sounds, and decided she had to get up and do something about it.
"What the- What IS that?" she asked herself, slipping into her robe and slippers. She then grabbed the baseball bat that Luke kept on his side of the bed, back from when he used to play, for protection - just in case.
She couldn't figure out where the sound was coming from, but it sounded like someone was actively trying to get into the house, so she decided the lower level was the best place to start off her search.
She tip toed down the stairs as quietly as she could and waited for the sound to happen again. This time she could hear it more clearly, and it sounded like it was coming from their storage room directly up above her head. She slowly crept back up the stairs stealthily and she waited outside the door to hear if the sound would happen again. All of a sudden the door swung open quickly, taking her by surprise, and she yelled when she saw him - but luckily her instincts didn't cause her to swing the bat and make contact.
"Jesus, Lorelai! What the hell are you doing!? You could've hit me with that thing!" Luke exclaimed, seeing the bat she was wielding above her head.
"Well, who's fault is that!? I thought you were someone trying to break in! What in the world are you doing banging around the house in the middle of the night anyway!?" she demanded.
"Middle of the - Lorelai it's only eight o'clock - it's hardly in the middle of the night!" Luke said, still trying to catch his breath, his heart felt as if it would beat out of his chest.
"Oh" she whispered, dropping the bat down off her shoulder. "But that still doesn't answer my question - WHAT the heck you're doing banging around!? I didn't even know you were HOME!" she cried, her own heart racing.
"It's what I do. I fix things" he said in the most blasé way ever.
"What were you fixing!? There's nothing broken in this room - we don't even hardly ever USE this room" she insisted.
"I know. That's why I want to turn this room into the nursery. For Rory's baby - and for ours" he whispered.
