Time had passed, and we were in the waiting room, waiting to be seen for our first doctors' appointments. Mom and I had arranged it to where we were able to get our appointment coincided with each other - at least for now. Both of us were insanely nervous, but because we had each other, going through this at the same time, it made things a little easier.
"Lorelai Gilmore?" The nurse called, looking out across the waiting room.
Mom and I both looked up. "Which Lorelai Gilmore?" she asked with a laugh.
"Excuse me? Oh - OH! I'm so sorry! There actually are two of you, aren't there? How funny! Were both of you wanting to go in together?" she asked.
Mom and I nodded, "I go by Rory, by the way, and she stuck with Lorelai" I explained shyly. She smiled at us and wrote than down on my file, and then she motioned for us to follow her through the door. Logan and Luke trailed closely behind us.
"This is so unusual, having a mother and a daughter pregnant at the same time. How exciting! Congratulations to both of you! And you two guys as well!" the nurse said, smiling at Luke and Logan.
"Thank you" they each said nervously. It was good that they had each other, also. Even though this wouldn't be Luke's first child, it was still his very first pregnancy situation, and they both needed all the backup they could get from each other.
"Okay, now I need you two to follow me. I need to get your weight and a urine sample from each of you before we can continue the appointment" she explained, and led the two of us back out.
"Wow. So this is - unreal. Isn't it unreal? I mean, I'm sweating here. Are you sweating, too, Logan?" Luke asked nervously.
Logan smiled and patted Luke on the shoulder. "We'll get through this together, man. I'm more nervous than anything, but we'll take care of each other. There have been many situations you and I have gotten through together, and I'm sure there will be many more to come" he said with a chuckle.
Luke nodded and smiled slightly. "Yeah, I guess you're right, huh?" he asked, realizing that was probably a fair assessment.
After a while, mom and I had come back into the room, and the doctor met us inside. She talked to us about doing some genetic testing, just to be on the safe side, due to our ages. She said I wouldn't be considered a high risk pregnancy, but that my mom would be, and that because of that, our appointments probably wouldn't sync up very often. We both agreed that we understood the risks and how cautious we both needed to be with our pregnancies. Prenatal vitamins are very important, as well as eating right, getting plenty of rest and enough exercise, and keeping caffeine consumption to a minimum. Neither of us liked that part, but at least we were in this together.
Soon it was time to see our first ultrasounds! I had asked mom to go first, and we both got emotional as I got to see my little brother or sister on screen for the first time. I couldn't believe after years of asking Santa, and making birthday wishes, that it would finally happen.
"Lorelai, your baby is looking beautiful! It looks healthy, it's measuring at the correct size to match up with your time frame of when you think you conceived, and it has a very strong heart beat. Now with the Chorionic Villus Sampling test that we've ordered for you, you'll actually learn the sex of this little peanut in as early as next week!" the doctor said happily.
Mom was holding Luke's hand, and it was finally just as real for him as well. He kissed her on the forehead as the doctor printed out some keepsake photos.
"Okay, now Rory. Get ready because you're up next. I'll step out for a moment while you get dressed, Lorelai, and you get undressed Rory, and then we'll introduce you and Logan to your baby, too" she said.
I nodded silently as Luke and Logan followed the doctor out to give my mom and I some privacy to change places.
I undressed from the waist down, and sat down on the table with the oversized paper cloth on my lap. "You ready to see your kid, kid?" she asked with a warm smile.
I took in a deep breath. "I don't think anything could ever fully get me ready for this. I'm so nervous! Is it normal to be terrified of your own child!?" I asked with a laugh.
"You'll do just fine. I promise" she said, and let them all know that we were ready for them to come back in.
The doctor went through the exact same procedure for me as she did with my mom, and I laid back nervous, and anxious, to see my baby.
"So... Rory... The symptoms you've been having... How have they felt?" she asked, not stopping on any image long enough for me to figure out why she was asking. Was there something wrong with my baby!?
"I - um - well, they've been pretty bad, really. I haven't gotten much relief, and the intensity seems to be getting stronger every day... Why?" I asked, wondering why she hadn't asked my mom that question.
The doctor still said nothing as she navigated the black mass on the screen.
"Doctor, is there something wrong?" Logan asked, as if reading my mind.
"No, no. Not at all, Logan... I just needed to verify something before I could say anything" she said.
"Say anything about what?" Mom asked.
A smile spread across the doctor's face. "Are you ready to see your babies, Rory?" she asked warmly.
I almost choked on my own saliva. "What!?" I exclaimed.
"BABIES!?" Logan asked.
"As in plural!?" Mom asked.
Luke was speechless.
The doctor chuckled. "Yes, plural. Congratulations, Rory and Logan. You're going to be having twins" she said proudly.
