He was drinking again.

When you arrived back at your shared apartment, you could smell the liquor in the air and you could hear quiet sobs as well... A small frown formed on your lips and you closed the door quietly. "Um, Leon, are you in here?" you called softly.

"[Name]..." Your name came out with a whimper, and you followed the sound of his voice to find the blond on the floor of the dining room. A quick glance around revealed a few vodka and champagne bottles strewn around the floor. Leon looked up at you; his blue-green eyes were bloodshot, and his expression was pained. "[Name], I'm sorry," he rasped, lowering his head and coughing weakly. "I'm so pathetic, aren't I..."

You sighed, moved to sit beside him, and slowly pulled him into a hug to your chest. The smell of strong alcohol lingered on his breath. You knew Leon fell into these episodes occasionally, the memories of Raccoon City and the Los Illuminados in Spain painfully and permanently embedded into his mind. With the newest outbreak of the C-Virus freshly dealt with, Leon had a lot on his mind, and you were afraid the burdens Leon was bearing would bring ideas of suicide back to the forefront of Leon's thoughts.

He was trying to stifle the sobs leaving him, but you could feel him physically relax in your arms, and you began to gently console him. "Leon... Leon, baby, you're not pathetic. Far from it," you whispered gently in his ear, and he sighed. "The fact that you have to worry about me... while I'm wasting away like this..." His voice was low, shaky, unsure. "H-how....how can I protect you if I'm just gonna pull shit like this... I love you, [Name], and I want to keep you safe, but I can't..."

"Oh, Leon, I love you, too..." You ran a hand through his soft hair. "And you're doing a wonderful job of protecting me. You're so strong..."

"Strong." He hiccuped and laughed harshly. "Strong enough to think that this was okay? Drinking myself to death. I wanted to die so badly, [Name]. Maybe if I did, these bad memories would finally go away... and you wouldn't be so worried. The last thing I wanted to do was worry you..."

You were quieted by the seriousness of Leon's words.

"I'm sorry, [Name]." He sat up, and tried to stand, awkwardly falling back against you and resigning himself to laying his head in your lap. "I know you're mad..."

"You don't have to go through this alone, Leon." Finally you smiled, continuing to run you fingers through his locks. "You've protected everyone your whole life, now its my turn to protect you. We..can protect each other. No matter what, I'm here for you. And," you leaned down to peck his forehead, "you ARE strong. You're still here, carrying on, despite all the shit life has thrown at you, and heaven knows how much its burdened you with, Leon. But you're here, and alive, and that's what matters, and I love you."

He looked up at you, his eyes shining, and even cracks a smile despite the sleepiness starting to settle in due to his drunken haze. "You... you're the best thing to ever happen to me," he murmured softly, and closed his eyes, contented for the first time that night. "And, I love you... so, so, so much."

You nodded, and no other words needed to be spoken.
