It was hard to watch.

Kururugi Suzaku was slowly becoming a shell of his former self, the normally bright green eyes of the boy you loved now growing harsh and empty. But you couldn't blame him; after seeing the death of the girl HE loved and was sworn to protect, his best friend turning out to be Zero, his biggest obstacle, and watching people die all around him due to Zero's Black Knights... Suzaku was reaching his limit. It was a surprise that he hadn't snapped yet.

It was cold as you worked, typing into your laptop as you subtly eyed him. You were situated in a train that was currently chugging along the lonely tracks of the countryside, working on the beginnings of whatever report would have to be made back to headquarters of the day's events. Suzaku was idle on a nearby chair and reading, his cape drawn around him almost like a security blanket, an slight escape needed from the recent attacks on his psyche that had thrown his world into a whirl. Recently the newly knighted Knight of Seven had been assigned along with you to protect Britannia's new military advisor, one by the name of Sir Julius Kingsley, as he went into Europe to bolster Euro Britannia's forces there in the war; but both you and Suzaku knew him as his former best friend and now sworn enemy Lelouch vi Britannia, with... SOMETHING done to him to make him more complacent in his new identity. Said military advisor just so happened to be nearby as well, eyeing his glass of water, beside the chessboard  that he set up earlier, that he had made Suzaku bring him just a couple of minutes ago with slight disgust, his other hand tapping a black king chess piece against the handle of his loveseat. It was strange, seeing Lelouch - er, Sir Kingsley - with that bejeweled eyepatch over his left eye as if hiding a deadly secret. You wondered if Suzaku knew what that secret was.

It was deathly quiet, save for every turn of the page of Suzaku's book and Julius's light tapping, and the tension in the air was so thick you felt you could grab it.

You wondered whether or not you should break the tension yourself; you were growing uncomfortable with the whole situation, and if you were to be working with the pair over the next coming weeks, you wanted everything to go smoothly...

"Ahem... Sir Kururugi?" Your voice was quiet, but it managed to catch Suzaku's attention. He slowly lowered his book from his gaze, his green eyes dark as he met your gaze. He didn't respond, but he waited patiently for you to continue. "I think we should discuss our plans when we arrive. I know I may be be overreacting, but I feel terrible anxious about all of this."

"...Very well." Suzaku placed down his novel onto the coffee table and gave a small sigh. "I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried as well. I'm concerned for your well-being, Miss [Name]... and your safety as well, my lord." He ended with an off-handed gaze at Julius, who had stopped tapping his chess piece against the furniture and now was gazing curiously at his two companions, interested in the conversation that had begun within his room. "Of course, Sir Kururugi, that IS what you are here for," Julius said with a grin. "My safety is in your hands. How unfortunate for you." His grin widened into an almost psychotic grin very briefly, before he waved Suzaku's gaze away with a flourish of his gloved hands. "But, please DO continue your conversation. I'm interested in how you plan to protect both me and little [Name] here."

You pouted at Julius's words. "No offense, Sir Kingsley, but I can take care of myself," you retorted, making Julius smirk ever so slightly at your words. "We're both here to defend you, but I'm just nervous on how we'll go about doing that." Once again, you took a look at Suzaku, who had stood up to kneel before the commander, a hand over his heart. "Excuse the inconvenience, Sir Kingsley, but Miss [Name] and I can finish this conversation outside if it will interfere with your... planning..." He eyed the set-up chessboard that Julius had so delicately placed his black chess piece onto, his lips slightly upturning in disgust. "Please excuse us..."

"Aren't one of you supposed to stay with me at all times?" He gave a small shrug, and then he gently tapped the glass water with his gloved fingers before subtly pushing the glass over. The now-lukewarm water pooled and soaked into the plush carpet, which the three of you watched cautiously. You were slightly afraid of the military advisor's reactions, Sir Kingsley was known for having harsh reactions to seemingly trivial things, including actions that happened of his own volition... But the military advisor simply gave the both of you a sickeningly sweet smile despite the evil glint shining within his sole uncovered eye. "Be a dear, and bring me some water, Sir Kururugi?" he crooned with a smirk. "That should be a good enough excuse, hm? It wouldn't do for my two protectors to be slacking off?"

You gritted your teeth in anger, and was about to speak up again before Suzaku stopped you, simply stating, "Yes, my Lord," before grabbing your hand and leading you outside.

The sun had just begun to set and the dimming light shine through the windows of the train car as  the sounds of the train continuing it's journey echoed peacefully through the hallway. You noticed that Suzaku's hands were clenched into a fist; you placed a hand on his shoulder, concern building in your expression. "Suzaku? How are you feeling?"

"...I can't stand him." His words were quiet and filled with fury. "It's taking so much self-control to not kill him right now..."

This broke your heart. The once-kind and all-loving Kururugi Suzaku was reduced to... To this. And Julius. no, Lelouch.... You knew the only thing right standing between Lelouch and an early grave was Suzaku's orders to protect him and his strong sense of duty. Quietly you lowered your head. "Its hard right now, Suzaku, I know, but things will get better -"

"Better huh." Suzaku chuckled, but it was dry and devoid of any emotion. "Things were BETTER when Euphy was here. Things would have been BETTER if Lelouch was actually dead all that time ago. Or am I wrong?" His green eyes scanned your expression intensely.

"...I just want you to know I'm always here for you, Suzaku." You frowned. " This... Whatever this is... You aren't going through it alone. Lelouch was my friend too ... and I care about you both. But... But especially you, Suzaku..." You could feel your face heating up at the mini confession you had given the Knight of Seven, but you continued to speak. "That's part of the reason I was so glad to be assigned to this mission. To be with you two again... Even if it was under such terrible circumstances." You offered him a soft smile. "I... I love you, Suzaku... And" - you cut him off when his green eyes widened, and he opened his mouth to speak- " I don't want to hear your answer to that right now. I just wanted you to know that I'll be by your side for as long as you'll have me."

Suzaku unclenched his fists... And for the first time in a while his eyes softened, and the smallest hint of a smile twitched onto his lips. "You've always been so kind, [Name]-chan."

"So have you, Sir Kururugi-kun," you responded with his title cheekily, the smile on his face such a rare sight nowadays that it was bringing a fluttering to your heart.

Quietly, he raised a hand to pat your head affectionately, and he turned to start walking down the hallway. "Now come on, Miss [Name]. I think we need to go fetch our Lord some water."

On the way, you noticed the subtle twitch of his fingers, and quietly you linked a hand with his.
