That night was filled with complete boredom and mainly just sitting in bed binge watching Scream Queens. My leg rested up on pillows and my mind trying to forget everything I had become whilst Connor had been away. The room was a mess, not quite as messy as earlier today, I had forced myself to clean up.
My cocktail dresses hung in the wardrobe, giving the impression that they remained untouched. Guilt oozed through my veins and arteries as I tried hard to distract myself, but still I rehearsed what I'd say to him the next day. My shoes were in the bin, that night was behind me. I convinced myself to believe that I was home, climbing on the roof to look at the stars and I fell off the ladder.
I sat in bed staring at my blank laptop screen, contemplating if it was worth trying to cook dinner or not. I picked up my phone to ring Domino's Pizza when there was a knock at the door. I knew it was unlocked and assumed it was Connor and he'd just come back earlier than expected.
"Come in." I said trying to get up and walk to the hallway to greet him.
"I thought you might want some dinner." The voice was recognisable but definitely not Connor's, but Jake's voice.
I stopped in the hallway, not wanting to turn the corner. "You shouldn't be here." I said timidly.
He had stopped too, just past the doorway. "I know but I thought you might need dinner."
"If I needed dinner, I would make it myself." I realised that was a complete lie considering my current state so I added, "Or ask my boyfriend to get it." Emphasising the word boyfriend.
At this stage we were still around the corner from each other, I couldn't see him and he couldn't see me. I heard him sigh. "Accept my peace offering will you?"
"I can't." I had to be blunt with him. As long as we stayed here it would be fine. If I can't see him, I have control.
"You must. I'll leave it here on the floor."
"No, take it home." Then I started to second guess myself.
"It's pizza." I could almost hear him grinning from around the corner. It was awfully tempting. "Just give me a chance please." He pleaded. And the next thing I knew he was standing in front of me, I don't know whether I walked to him or he walked to me, but somehow we were standing facing each other. He held out a pizza box and smiled that smile that so often had knocked me off my feet. I tried so hard not to look at him and took the pizza box, showing him to the lounge room.
For a few minutes we sat in complete silence, enjoying our pizza which I can't deny, was fabulous. No regrets taking the pizza but I was still slightly uncomfortable around him.
He broke the silence. "We can work things out." He said still chewing a piece of pizza.
"No we can't." I stared out the window, not daring to look into his eyes. Before he could say another word, I continued. "Your job, come on, it's on the line here. Also, I have a boyfriend, come on."
"Don't deny that you're having fun though."
"I am, but honestly, I don't wanna loose my boyfriend to you." Or did I? I was unsure, but I knew that I should at least try with Connor.
"We can work something out, even if it's not regular. I'm obsessed with you Aisha I swear." My stomach did flips but I ignored it and said nothing. "After you finish work maybe. It would only be an hour I swear. I'll go crazy if I don't see you."
"Let's play a game." I said innocently. "How about spit? Or Uno?"
"Spit." He said sulkily.
We got right into the game, I'm so competitive so I was convinced I was going to win. He shoved me, I slapped his hand, we both almost fell over in fits of laughter. There was only the joker and one huge pile of cards left and as we both went for the joker, our hands landed neatly on top of each other and our heads almost touching. He leaned in, took his hand off the pile and put it in my hair and kissed me gently. It was heavenly.
