"Dad?" I said as I walked through the door. No reply came. He was supposed to finish work at four, it was now six. "Hey Dad I'm going to stay at Connor's tonight."
I walked up to my bedroom, grabbed my pyjamas. He never really goes out except to work and to get the paper. "Dad? Are you home? Daaaad?"
I walked down stairs and into the lounge room. "Dad? Oh my god, you scared me. I thought you'd gone out or something." He was sitting in front of the television with his back to me and didn't reply. "Dad?" I said quietly, thinking he was asleep. I walked around the front of the couch.
"Oh my god."
He sat on the couch, his eyes wide, not moving a muscle. I felt his pulse. It wasn't there. His hands were cold. He wasn't breathing.
"Oh my god." Tears welled in my eyes.
I gave him a little shake. "Dad? Dad?!" He sat there without moving a muscle. I couldn't accept it. Tears seeped from my eyed and slid down my cheeks.
I knelt on the floor in hysterics. I was there for almost ten minutes until Connor walked in.
"Aisha, is everything okay?" I stood up and ran into his arms. "Honey, what's wrong?" I cried on his shoulder, unable to answer him. I walked him over to where Dad was on the couch. He gasped. "Aisha, just breathe, it's okay, I've got you."
My memories from that night include questions, sirens and crying, every memory has Connor right next to me though, holding me, helping me through it all. What a good man.
As Dad was a cop, they were all there, a few tears were shed. Cause of death was a heart attack and for weeks I blamed myself, I guess the same way that Dad blamed himself for the loss of Mum. I thought, what if I hadn't gone bowling? What if I had arrived home slightly earlier? Would things have turned out differently?
Connor convinced me to get counselling, which helped an awful lot, but I still think about it today. Could I have prevented it? Or was it supposed to happen? If it hadn't have happened, I wouldn't have met Jake. I would still be with Connor and my life wouldn't be full
