My heart felt like it rose through the roof and I started fretting.
"What, what's wrong?" I asked even though I knew it wasn't necessarily the best text message for him to look at.
"Let me read this to you. 'Aisha, I'm sorry if you feel that way, if you are uncomfortable around me but that was never my intention, I just wanted to have some fun and I thought you did too. You are a great girl and I can't get my mind off you so if you're free after work sometime then I'd love to meet up.' Aisha please tell me what is going on." He looked disappointed rather than mad, and I don't know which I would have preferred.
"Okay, here's the truth. He keeps harassing me. I tell him I've got a boyfriend but he seems to think that this behaviour is acceptable." I tried to tell myself it was half true, but it really wasn't.
"Well it's not, we can get him fired." He looked so concerned.
"No I'd rather not do that, but I need it to stop." I was making a mess of the already messy situation.
"Maybe you should threaten to tell his boss and block his number."
I smiled, leaned over and gave him a peck on the cheek. "Thank you, yes I'll do that."
Coffee was like my alcohol. I drank and drank and drank that whole day. After making me my fourth coffee in two hours, Connor mentioned it wasn't healthy and I looked stressed.
"Come on, let's go somewhere far away to take your mind off it. We'll take puppy too."
I smiled. He always knew what to do.
We drove and drove for over two hours. I had no idea where we were going.
"Woah.." I was quite speechless. He had brought me to a magnificent waterfall. It was as tall as what I would imagine the Eiffel Tower would be. It was more magical than the Cinderella story. It was truly incredible, and I couldn't believe that I'd lived so close to this place for so long and not known it was there.
We sat on some rocks at the bottom, watching our dog play in the water, scaring herself with the splashes she made. He was right, I needed a distraction and it really worked.
On the way home, Connor turned his little car onto a lonely dirt road surrounded by pine trees. He drove up the road a little way then pulled over and gestured for me to get out. We walked down a small, winding path and found a huge blue lake, surrounded by massive trees. It was dead quiet.
We stood there in silence for many minutes until he broke the silence in barely a whisper.
"I love you."
It took a while for me to process. "I'm sorry you what?"
"I said I love you." And then he kissed me so I didn't have to answer. He saved me. I wouldn't have known what to say anyway. I didn't think I was ready for that. But I kissed him all the same. He was a once in a life time man. I don't know how I ended up with him, but I did, and I was lucky. Very lucky. He loved me, and I knew he really did.
