Ch:6 Finding What We Werent Looking For.

When I woke up I looked over to find Daryl holding Judith. He was feeding her and talking to her. I smiled and said "we need to get going, we need to find the rest of your group". He handed Judith to me and said "ok, lets go".

I put Judith in her harness and put her on my back. I grabbed my knives and stuff them in my boots. Then I put my pistol in my pocket. Next I grabbed my crossbow and hung it around my shoulder. Finally I grabbed her diapers and formula.

Daryl crawled out of the tree and waited for me to come down. After I got on the ground I stared at my treestand that was home to me for around 6 months. I felt a single tear run down my face so I quickly wiped it away.

As Daryl and I walked on the road I asked "will your group take me in". He smiled and said "they will have no choice cause you are with me. If Rick see's that you saved ass kicker then he will let you in". I asked "are there any kids my age in the group"? Daryl thought for a second and said "well Carl would be the same age as you, he's Rick's son. There are other kids in the group, but they are younger than you and Carl".

After we walked for awhile I took the crossbow off of my back and aimed it at a tree. Daryl looked over and grabbed his crossbow. He looked in the direction I was looking and asked "what do you see"? I pulled the trigger and hit a squirrel directly in the head.

After I took it off of the tree I pulled it off of my arrow. I smiled and said "lunch" answering the question he asked me. He smiled and said "nice shot". I handed his my crossbow and asked "could you put the arrow back in the holder for me"? He smiled and said "sure".

I grabbed the knife from my left boot and began to gut the squirrel. I cut out a piece of raw meat and ate it. I cut out an even bigger piece and handed it to Daryl. He gulped it down and asked "remember when me and Merle would take you squirrel hunting when your dad was at work"? I smiled and said "yep, you and Merle taught me about everything I know".

He smiled and askec "like what"? I continued to gut the squirrel while I said "you and your brother taught me how to hunt, how to gut animals, how to fight, how to use weapons, how to track about anything, and how to fish. The most important thing you guys taught me was how to be strong and brave". He smiled, but stayed silent.

After we finished eating the raw meat he handed me my crossbow and we continued to walk. We got to this run down neighborhood and scavanged all of the houses. After we met back outside we set all of the stuff we found on the ground.

I found a backpack to carry our stuff in, a shotgun with a box full of shells, and some bottled water. Daryl found 2 boxes of crackers, 3 cans of fruit cocktail, and more arrows for our crossbows.I put all of our stuff in the backpack besides the arrows. We loaded our crossbows and put the other arrows in the holder.

We were walking out of the community when we seen a single walker walking down the road. We walked close to it and I whistled for it to turn around. When it turned around Daryl studied it for a second then dropped to his knees. He began to cry while he said "thats Carol". He got up and tried to run over to her, but I held him back using all the strength I had. While I tried to hold him back I said "she's gone, theres nothing we can do about it besides killing her". He said "fuck you" to me and kept crying.

He fell to the ground and continued to cry. I put her in the sights of my crossbow and pulled the trigger. She fell to the ground and that was the end of her. I set my crossbow down on the road and walked over to Daryl. I kneeled down on my knees and held him. He put his arms around me and cried into my shoulder.

After a few minutes he calmed down and got up. I was still hurt that he said fuck you to me so I didnt say anything to him. I switched the harness around so Judith was laying her head on my chest. I kissed the top of her head and said "I promise that we will find your dad and brother".

I walked up to Carol and pulled my arrow out of her half rotted face. I looked at her and said "I'm sorry this happened to you" then I continued to walk forward. I loaded my crossbow again and looked over my shoulder. Daryl kneeled down by Carol and said "I'll miss you Carol". Then he grabbed a rare Cherokee rose growing in the grass and put it on her. I said in a quiet tone "c'mon lets get outta here".
