It's not that I don't believe in love, I'm always a strong believer in it. I'm just terrified that it does not believe in me. - Alpha Maximus

Chapter 21

So she did Call after all.

Alpha Maximus' POV

Alpha Maximus was looking over a few of the renovation details in his late grandfather's house. It was passed on to him when his father Wes, decided he wanted to live away from the pack house with his mate.

Over the last three years, after his true mate Claire left him, he used all of his spare time in renovating the place. Fresh furniture, new equipment, modern safety systems... the whole nine yards. He was pretty impressed with himself, but he still felt something amiss. A feminine touch. It didn't give a homey vibe yet.

"Good job." He told the werewolf contractor, his arms running through the marble slab in the kitchen.

"Thank you, Alpha." He said bowing down and walking out, glad to be out of the scrutinizing stare of the Alpha from hell.

Alpha Maximus wondered how to make the place more livable, but he couldn't figure what he could do. He shook his head and walked out of the house. The house was hidden away with trees surrounding it, but a small passageway gave the clear view of the pack house which was walkable distance. It was private, yet safe at the same time. He couldn't figure out why his own mother hadn't wanted to stay there.

He was on his way to his suite, when Linda stepped out of her room, making him stop in his tracks. Maximus had sort of been in love with Linda all through high school, but had never been romantically involved with her. And then he found out that she was his Cousin Ben's mate, and decided they weren't meant to be. He remembered the day Ben died, he had asked him to take care of her. And he did, not romantically. Not once. He always had a soft spot for her, it was something his previous mate Claire and he had argued about countless number of times.

But he couldn't be mated with her, it'd be wrong. And his father disapproved, when Ben died in a rogue attack, Linda was pregnant. The loss of her mate caused her stress and she lost the baby a week later. The doctor said that she wouldn't be able to carry any more children.

He wished that Linda would find someone who would make her happy. Unfortunately, that someone wouldn't be him, he needed children for the pack to go on. And at the same time he didn't want to mate with his dead Cousin's mate.

"Maximus. What are you doing in the middle of the hallway at eleven?" she said, giving him a small smile.

Linda Stuart was a petite, blonde hair, brown doe eyed girl. She had been through so much in her life, that she was confident she would never find happiness. Her only source of any joy was her best friend Mia and her mate's cousin Alpha Maximus. He took care of her so well, and since he was an Alpha people respected her almost as a Luna. She tried to do everything a Luna would probably do, she didn't have anyone to compare to. The pack didn't have a Luna in almost two decades.

"Was just checking out some stuff. Where you going?" he asked her. She, his cousins and his father were the only ones who got away by calling him Maximus.

" I was headed to the kitchen to get some food. Do you want me to make you something?" she asked, offering him a small smile.

Usually he would've said yes, but something made him want to head back to his office that day.

"I have some things to take care off. Night Linda." He said and walked back to his office.

His office didn't have too many important things and never original documentation. That was in his personal office in his suite and he would move it to his renovated home if he did ever move at all. His office had so many people walk in, that he never trusted that everything would be safe in the pack house. He did have cameras and his office was usually locked, but one could never be too sure.
