Carmen

"Carmen James, to Styles' Office." The old, familiar voice boomed over the intercom. I sighed, shutting down my computer and stood up, heading out of my office. I walked down the halls, through the place I knew like the back of my hand. I stared at the ground, listening as my shoes slapped against the floor, occasionally looking up to acknowledge a person passing by.

What did my boss, Harry Styles, want? Was he firing me? He wouldn't, if he knew what was good for him. He wouldn't fire the agent who has solved more than a hundred cases and knows next to everything about what to do for different types of crimes.

Let's say I kick ass.

I took a deep breath and turned the bronze knob on his door.

"You asked to see me, sir?" I said, standing in front of his desk.

He nodded. "Sit."

I sat in the very uncomfortable chair by his desk, as he typed something into his computer, printing an unknown document.

He placed the paper in a file and slapped the file on the desk in front of me. "We've got a case for you, James, and it's a killer."

I took the file and browsed through it. "Tell me more."

His jaw clenched. "We've actually got a few things, that may or not be connected. First of all, a prisoner named Zayn Malik escaped from his locked cell last week, and we have absolutely no lead on where he is."

I nodded. "But I know what this Malik guy looks like, I helped escort him to his cell. None of these look like him." I said, holding up three head shots.

"You didn't let me finish. The next crime was with those three men; They all went missing two days ago. As you can see, the blonde one is one of your co-workers, Niall Horan."

I remembered him. Niall and I were partnered on my first case; he showed me all the ropes.

"And the man with the shorter hair is Liam Payne, one of our police officers."

I nodded. "What about the third?"

"That is Louis Tomlinson," He sighed. "A man we don't know much about. He isn't connected to us at all, but he might be to either Liam or Niall. All we know is that he probably helped Niall and Liam find and confront Zayn when he committed the crime."

I nodded, a bit confused. "So what do I do? Find the three men, arrest the other two, I'm guessing."

"Carmen, this isn't any normal case. These two men are dangerous-"

"And you've said this to the person who-"

His eyes darkened as he interrupted me. "Yes Carmen, your arrogant ass has done a lot. But these men are dangerous." He paused, looking up at me. "Will you take the case?"

I stuffed the folder into my bag. "Yes."

"Good."

"Do I have any leads, places to check, places to go?" I asked.

"Zayn was found in a warehouse somewhere north of the city. The only ones who knows where this place is, is those three men, Zayn, and the second identity. That's a possibility to where the men are, but we aren't sure."

"Alright. I'll get on it." I walked to the door, but his voice stopped me as I laid my hand on the doorknob.

"Oh, and Carmen? I'll assign you a partner as I see fit later." He said. He paused. "Good luck." He said, his jaw set. I nodded and walked out of his office.

----

"Carmen!" I heard a voice say behind me. I looked behind me to see Ashton running to catch up with me. "How are you?"

"Fine." I said, keeping my gaze forward.

"So anything interesting going on lately?" He asked, trying to get me to speak to him.

"No. Everyday things." I said.

"Neither with me," He said. Out of the corner of my eye I saw him smile. "Do you want to eat lunch with me?"

"No, and by the way, it's two in the afternoon."

"Yes, I know," He laughed. "I just wanted to talk to you more."

I rolled my eyes and turned away from him, towards my office.

"Ashton Fray, to Styles' office." I heard Harry's voice boom over the intercom. I smiled to myself, flicking through the folder Harry gave me. Maybe today is the day that he'll get fired. He's a wimp, after all.

The first thing I found out for this case was find out where the men were last seen. They both disappeared two days ago, in the evening. An hour apart. Liam Payne, last seen at the Police station. His wife last saw him at home, before he left for work. He was last seen at the end of his shift, leaving to go home to his wife. Niall was last seen here too, and his girlfriend said she last saw him at a date the night before, and had talked to him briefly over the phone three hours before his disappearance. She said that nothing seemed wrong.

I had done a lot in the two hours since Harry called me to his office, but the one thing that bothered me was the fact that I still had nothing on the third man; Louis Tomlinson.

"Carmen James, to Styles' office." I heard Harry say over the intercom. I sighed, standing up. Maybe he has some information for me.

I walked down the hall to his office, quicker than the last time I walked down this hallway. I didn't have any doubts this time around. I reached the wooden doors when the bronze knobs, knocking once, and then stepping inside.

Harry was sitting at his desk, and Ashton sat in one of the two chairs in front of him, holding a folder.

"I'm sorry, did I interrupt?" I asked.

Harry shook his head. "Carmen, this is your partner for this case. I'm not sure if you've met, but this is-"

"Ashton, I know." I snapped, narrowing my eyes at him. "We've.... met."

"Good." Harry said. I looked over to Ashton, who had that smug grin on his face, and I wished that Harry wasn't there so I could slap it off his face. "I imagine you two will do well. Your combination of skills will surely help on this case." Harry said, drumming his fingers. "Work together. You're free to take leave of absence for this case, just call and let us know. You're dismissed."

Ashton walked out, and I waited. When the door shut behind him, I almost slammed my palm on the desk, but stopped myself.

"Why him?" I asked, teeth gritted, to prevent myself from lashing out at him.

"He was deemed fit for the spot," He said. "And I trust that you WILL work together, James. You're treading on thin ice, with that attitude."

I sighed, trying to flush the rage out of me. "Alright. Goodbye, Harry."

"Goodbye, James," He said as I turned to leave. "Good luck."
