My evening was amazing...
Can you sense the sarcasm?
After Schmidt dismissed me from duty, the two burly men who would escort me to and from my meetings with Schmidt, talked animatedly to each other about how amazing the Dictator was.
This was a usual occurrence for me, walking back late from meetings, it had been going on since October, it was November in 1943 now. Schmidt had been having multiple meetings with other people and I was used as his peace keeper, since I was a child, blonde hair, green eyes, catholic, pale skin, thin, tall for my age, and generally robust, plus I could speak German, a true Aryan according to Hitler. Yes, I met the devil, he seemed quite attached to me, and was asking me questions. I was polite to him, because Bucky's life hinged on my compliance, but it was torcher. Surprisingly Hitler wasn't like Schmidt, he seemed very controlled and sane, he seemed to have a keen interest in my hidden talents. Since I was bored during one of the meetings Hitler was at (I didn't even know he was there) I hummed a tune from The Phantom of The Opera, I believe it's called Think Of Me but I'm not sure. Hitler recognized it being a big fan of the opera himself, if I knew I wouldn't have been humming opera. Alas, he found out that I could sing the opera and demanded I give him audience next month at a grand gala that he was having, to provide music for him and all the higher ups of society. Why does everyone have galas, I mean is it improper to have a party to the richer socialites or what, honestly. But, the one thing that was helpful from being a peace keeper at these meetings was that I could watch as Zola and he progressed in their other work. They had developed a weapon that as soon as it hits you it disintegrates you, yes the others functioned but those were prototypes, now they're able to harness the energy and use it to power all their weapons.
We were now walking through the manufacturing part of the facility, below us were the cells where they kept the Prisoners Of War, P-O-Ws better known as POWs. I knew them as friends and allies. Most were lovely men, but then there were those few that were grade-A jerks.
When my two escorts weren't looking, I was able to slip away. It was nearly midnight, the latest night I've had in a while, the experiments hadn't been as damaging to Bucky so he was normally out cold by the time I got back to the lab, instead of writhing in pain and mumbling incoherently about things I'd rather not repeat.
I was slinking around where they had the ammunition being made. I went over and pocketed about ten cartridges. I felt eyes on me, I saw movement in the shadows behind the machine. I slowly crept my way cautiously around the machine. I saw a shadow moving, it was maybe a bit taller than I was. I accidentally kicked a rock, it rolled over and hit the foot of the creature. They stood up tall and turned around slowly. The person must have been crouched down because they were much taller than I had originally thought. I'm about 5'2 and they looked originally to be like 5'5. Now, after they stood to their full height they seemed to be more around the height of six feet.
I went to scream, but the figure launched themselves at me. They covered my mouth and held me flush against their chest. I struggled to free myself from the stranger. I yanked with all my might, but I couldn't get them to let me go. Slow tears fell from my eyes due to the sheer panic that was coursing through me. The person holding me was breathing heavily. Once we had both calmed ourselves enough to not do anything stupid in the others company such as tick the other off.
"Are you going to call for help?" A very soft whisper tickled my ear.
I shook my head frantically, no.
The now identifiable man slowly removed his hand from my mouth. I spun around so quick, I nearly gave myself whiplash from my hair. I observed the unknown soldier. He was very tall, a handsome young man maybe twenty-one in age. He had pale blonde hair, that was hard to see from under the strange helmet. His helmet had motorcycle goggles on it. His crystal blue eyes sparkled with a strange allure of excitement and determination, similar to Dick's. He was very muscular, it was unimaginable. He wore a worn brown leather jacket. But, I must admit under the leather jacket was a very peculiar outfit, his top seemed to bear the colours and symbols of the American flag. He wore combat pants, and boots with his leather jacket zipped all the way up to his mid-chest region, he held a few guns, keys and a fair amount of gear.
"Who are you?"
We both asked simultaneously after checking each other out. He must have noticed my body, how my muscles were visible now, and the body fat was gone, I wore Bucky's coat with nude Barbie doll heels, my dress was so tight that you could see where my ribs ended. My cheekbones and jaw were well defined. Makeup covered all the blemishes on my skin and circles under my eyes. My hair, was perfectly styled, but you could see all the grease and grime in it since it hadn't been washed properly since... Tønsberg, good lord that was a long time ago, almost two years.
Last time I was able to wash my hair was the day after they brought me to the lab. Everyday before a meeting I'm whisked away and have a female come and "make me pretty". She will, wash my body, which is thoroughly annoying, brush my hair and do it up for the day then dress me in some cute little dolls outfit and adorable little Barbie heels. Always the same woman, her name is Nina, and she's nice but super annoying she keeps talking and complaining. She complains about how I have been given my aryan status and she hasn't.
I decided I was going to answer first, "I go by Snow, who are you?"
We were whispering because the two blubbering idiots had stopped and were chatting still, they must have forgotten about me, good. He didn't answer me. He continued to stare at me, his eyes unmoving looking at my torso. I began to feel self conscious and pulled the navy blue jacket, that I just couldn't part with, tighter around me. The man's jaw tightened, and he grabbed the collar and sleeve of the jacket, he yanked me forward so I was inches from his face.
He demanded me a question that surprised me.
"Where did you get this jacket?" He demanded, his voice strained, and quiet. His eyes glistening with an emotion all too familiar, fear.
"I didn't steal it or take it from a fallen soldier if that's what you're wondering." I whispered back defensively.
"This jacket belongs to Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes, how did you get it?" He demanded roughly shaking me a little.
"He gave it to me." I answered indignantly.
The man released me and I stumbled on my feet. Even though I had the highest regards to this man, I did not fully trust him.
"If you're here to save the soldiers, then they're downstairs, the keys are on the man over there I can distract the other ones while you get the keys. The stairs are over there, and if you're looking for someone not down there then they're probably dead or with me, in Zola's office/laboratory' which is upstairs, over there," I pointed to the hallway that I would go down, "bye." I waved as I walked towards the two guards who had finally noticed I was missing.
The guards saw me almost immediately, they rushed over and snatched up my arms, and dragged me towards my personal prison. I looked back and saw the guard that was patrolling with the keys, being dragged back into the shadows. I silently prayed the man was here to help the soldiers, Bucky and I. And, I sincerely hoped it was the man I thought it was, that would mean I could fully trust him.
