I had another dream. Except for the fact that this felt more real, more...personal.
I was at the train tracks where me and my childhood best friend, Peggy, used to walk on. Peggy was my family and always will be. She was there for me and I was there for her. I remeber whenever we were kids and the others would pick on me because I was younger than the rest. We both were. We skipped a couple of grades. Every time we got called names or punched by the other kids, we picked each other up and it was all okay -- because I knew she was there for me and she knew I was there for her. Best friends forever.
The air was cold and I could see my breathe I looked to my left and straight ahead. Nothing. As I was about to look to my right someone said "Are you ready?"
I looked to see who it was. It was Peggy, but older and with dark circles around her eyes. She was skinny with dark short choppy hair and those blue eyes. She had some freckles on her nose that I honestly thought was one of her best features. It was adorable, honestly.
"Peggy?" I asked.
"Yeah, dummy, it's me. Now are you ready? I see a cart coming and I don't want to miss it" she said.
Ah, the same old Peggy.
I looked left again and saw a train coming our way. There was a red cart open and ready to jump in.
"You know I'm ready" I said.
"Okay then --- GO!" Peggy sprinted off and I sprinted about three seconds behind her.
"C'MON ALICE! YOU GOT THIS!" She said, as her leather jacket was flying behind her like a cape.
My feet stomped on the rocks, which were seriously uncomfortable, and I was breathing heavily. Hot air was coming out of my lungs into the cold evening quickly as I sprinted. Peggy quickly caught up to the cart, grabbed the handle, and pulled herself up.
"C'MON ALICE! GET YOUR ASS UP HER!" Peggy shouted
When did you become such an asshole, huh?
"I'M COMING YOU ASSHOLE!" I shouted back. I my feet stomped harder against the rocks. I quickly caught up to the cart, grabbed the handle and pulled myself up. Peggy helped me. Once I finally got on and Peggy let go of me, she looked at me like I was some kind of ghost.
"What?" I asked.
"Nothing I'll explain in a few seconds" she said.
"So how's life, Peggy?" I asked.
"Absolute shit" she grabbed a flask that was inside her jacket and drank from it.
Well then, that wasn't the answer I was expecting.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"My grades are fantastic. Family isn't. Mom is gone, Dad's a drunk because of it, and well, you're gone and I don't have anybody" she confessed.
With Peggy and I, we were always comfortable to say whatever we want. We could tell each other anything and not have second thoughts about it. That's what friendship is -- what family is. When you can say whatever and fell absolutely comfortable with it. You can trust them not to tell anyone about anything, you can trust them not to judge you, you can trust them with any information and not have anxiety about it because you know that they will keep it secret and stay by your side no matter what you've don't, no matter what has happend to you. That is family. And my family didn't end in blood -- nor did Peggy's.
"Oh my lord, Peggy, you could've called me, or something-"
"What? Like Ouja board or something?" She scoffed off.
What? Does she think I'm dead?
"Peggy, I'm not dead" I said, "I swear I'm right here."
"You're a figure of my imagination" she sipped from her flask again.
"Peggy, I'm not-"
"They found you're body in your room by the door. You were struggling to get out. You know, when the cops showed up at the door I was smart enough to know what was going on. I cried for days and nights. I had nightmares and I still do."
I teared up "Peggy...."
"So...since I'm on this train, with a drunk father, no mother, and I'm alone, I'm going to get so drunk and numb and well....you'll see after that."
I took in a deep breath....Burgundy
"Burgundy?"
"Yep. Good stuff."
"Peggy...you shouldn't do this..."
"Nope, maybe not, because I'm like my father now....but different..."
I started crying, I couldn't believe that she was left like this....Peggy...of all people.
"Stop drinking it, please" I begged.
"I want to see you. I know you probably stopped hoping that there's a god of any kind, but I still believe that there is....there must be..." she looked up to the sky and then looked at me as she drank the last of her burgundy, "I'm coming to see you."
She went to the edge of the train cart, she lifted her head up and braced herself for her fall. There was no way that I'd be able to let her off that edge. She let go of the edges she was holding on to and fell forward.
"NO!" I screamed as I ran and jumped of the edge. I was heavier than her so I fell faster and caught up with her quickly.
YOU. ARE. NOT. DYING. ON. ME. PEGGY GRAHAM.
I grabbed her in a tight hug, and forced my back to face the ground.
I'm the one who should take the fall. I'm the one who left. It's me who deserves this.
My hair was whipping around my face, and I had tears in my eyes. The ground was so close now, but it felt like forever. I close my eyes and let out my last breath. I hit the ground...and then came the dark nothingness. The flashes of the scene run fast like life flashing before my eyes and before I know it...
I'm back in the bed, I took a deep breath in and sit straight up in the bed. My eyes were open wide. I was hyperventilating.
"Holy shit" I breathed out, "hooolly shit."
"Are you okay?" Aiden said; putting his hand on my shoulder.
I flinched at his touched.
"I'm sorry" he apologized.
"It's okay" I said.
"But seriously, are you okay?" He asked.
"It felt so real...my dream... she was there and... I was there...."
"You know, the gene also cause you to be in two places at once right?" He said.
"What?" I asked in astonishment.
"Yeah" he said, "Fa never told you this?"
I shifted to the edge of the bed "Oh my god, Aiden, I died."
"What?" He asked, "but that's completely impossible you're--"
"Right here, yeah, I know" I said, "Holy shit this is crazy."
I tried to put my hands on the sides of my head, but I couldn't move my arm, and it was excruciatingly painful when I tried.
I grabbed my arm with my left hand, "AH! HOLY MOTHER OF MARY!" I hissed through my teeth. Soon after my arm, my ribs starting hurting,
"MMMHM!!" I tried to not make so much noise.
"OH MY GOD! ALICE!"
David came rushing in and my vision was getting blurry.
Am I starting to die?
Soon my vision went black, and I went right into a the blackness.Soon I appeared in the Grand Central Station, it was empty. No one was in here. I looked around.
"Well, hello there" I turned around to see Fa Liang.
"Fa..." I said.
"Yes, child, it's me. How's life been?" He asked.
"Um, well I think I'm dying but otherwise great" I said.
"Oh, that's just the side affects of being in two places at once. You'll be okay" he flicked his hand as if it wasn't even a problem.
"So I'm dying...."
"Yes."
"...and I'll we up in absolute perfect condition?"
"Absolutely" he said.
What the hell?
"So is this real or is it in my head?" I asked.
"Of course it's in your head, Grand Central Station is never completely empty" he said.
"Right."
"You're still confused and discovering what you can do with the gene" he said.
"Well, what you can do is, as you've experienced, run faster, heal faster, be way more intelligent, survive most disasters, oh and be in two places at once. The other one thing, you haven't figured out is, hearing most things that others can't" he says.
"Umm I think I've actually experienced that one" I say.
He cocks an eyebrow "Oh?"
"Yes, during Brianna's crazy little scene on the Empire State Building, I saved a little girl all because I could hear her screams. Which reminds me, I have to see her, soon."
"Ah, you heard this child when no one else could."
"Yes."
"Good job."
Suddenly Grand Central Station shook.
"What's happening?" I asked.
"Time for you to go now, Alice."
"But, Fa, what am I supposed to do?"
"That's up to you to decide."
"But Fa. FA!"
Everything blurred out and I couldn't see anything anymore.I sat straight up with my eyes shot wide open, and took in a deep breath.
