Beside You

For the next two days, I sat in my room and cried. I only came out to get food and use the bathroom.

I could never hate Adam, but I definitely "strongly disliked" him.

Jerome and Brice were the only ones other than Adam allowed in my room. Brice brought in movies and popcorn and we'd watch them together. Jerome gave me updates on Mitch and let me FaceTime him sometimes.

Adam had taken away my phone and I never let him in when he asked.

Mitch hardly left his room either, at least that's what Jerome said.

On the second day, Jerome let me FaceTime Mitch again.

"Hey, Alex!" Mitch said, trying to fake happiness.

"Hey, Mitch," I said, smiling.

"I miss you," Mitch said, his face becoming serious.

"I miss you, too," I replied, a frown on my face.

"I don't know how much longer I can stand being away from you. It was different when you were thousands of miles away. But now, you're only a few feet away from me," Mitch said.

"So close but so far away..." I sang.

"That sounds farmiliar. What song is it?" Mitch asked.

"Beside You by 5 Seconds of Summer. It basically sums up our relationship right now," I said.

"No wonder, it's one of your favorite bands, that's why I recognize it. Sing a bit more for me?" Mitch said.

"Within a minute I was all packed up, I got a ticket to another world. I don't wanna go, I don't wanna go. Sudden words are hard to speak when your touch is all I seek, don't ever leave you said to me. When we both fall asleep underneath the same sky, to the beat of our hearts at the same time, so close but so far away, can you hear me... She sleeps alone, my heart wants to come home, I wish I was, I wish I was, beside you... She lies awake, I'm tryna find the words to say, I wish I was, I wish I was, beside you..." I sang.

"That does sound a lot like us... I have an idea. Tonight at midnight. Meet me in the backyard," Mitch said.

"What if Adam finds out?" I asked.

"He won't, Jerome and Brice will help make sure of that. That okay, Jerome?" Mitch said to Jerome.

"We've got it. I better get going, Alex. I'm kinda gonna need my phone," Jerome said.

"Okay. Bye, Mitch!" I said.

"See you tonight," Mitch said, ending the call.

"Good luck," Jerome said, leaving my room.

I smiled at the celing. Maybe tonight would make things better.
