A Birthday Blast

I was still coming down from my birthday high when Sam's birthday rolled around only 8 days later. Even in my state of euphoria, I was able to pull off what was supposed to be an epic day for my husband. Declan and Dean were in charge of the kids during the day, while Dad and Marissa would pick them up and keep them overnight. My day plans went off without so much as a hint of catastrophe; my evening plans, however, were about to take a nearly tragic turn. I had made reservations at one of the fanciest restaurants in town, and we were almost done eating when a very suspicious looking duo of men came walking through the door. They nonchalantly walked past all the diners and headed straight through the door to the kitchen, while the host ran after them screaming at them to stop. In a matter of seconds, we heard what sounded like a gunshot followed by a flash of fire coming from the kitchen. Since my chair was closer to the kitchen, Sam instinctively jumped up and put his body in front of mine to protect me from anything that might fly out of that kitchen. Luckily for us, the blast had been limited to only the kitchen. As all the rest of the diners looked on in horror, one of the cooks ran out asking if there were any doctors or medical personnel dining that night. It just so happened that one of the women dining with her husband was a nurse, so she followed the cook back to the kitchen and advised her husband to dial 911. Sam turned to me and asked, "Are you alright, honey?" Still in shock from whatever we just witnessed, I couldn't speak so instead I just nodded my head. The next thing I knew, the nurse was walking back out of the kitchen, the entire staff behind her, with one of the other cooks carrying the injured staff member. Very calmly she turned to all of us and said, "Everyone needs to leave now if you don't wish to be blown to bits. The boom we heard was a gunshot. It hit a gas line. I'd say we have about two minutes before this place explodes." Of course there was widespread panic as everyone, staff and diners alike, scrambled for the exit. I was still in shock and couldn't move, so Sam picked me up and carried me out to the car. The ambulance was already waiting for the injured man, and I watched as they quickly loaded him in, then watched as all the other guests took off as fast as possible in their automobiles. Sam and I were the last ones to get out of that parking lot. We were about two minutes down the road when I watched in horror behind us as the restaurant exploded into a big fireball. "She saved our lives," I said, still not fully comprehending what I had just witnessed. "Are you sure you're ok?" Sam asked. "You didn't get hit by any flying shrapnel or anything, right?" "I don't think so," I answered, looking up and down my body and just feeling my skin for anything that didn't belong. "Do you want me to take you to get checked out, just in case?" Sam was truly worried. "I'm fine," I promised. "Just in a lot of shock and disbelief right now." "I can't imagine why," Sam said, trying to lighten the mood. The next thing I knew, both of our phones were ringing. Glancing at our caller IDs, we saw that Declan was calling me while Dean was calling Sam. We answered at the same time. "We're fine," we both declared to our brothers. While I couldn't hear what Dean was saying to Sam, I could hear my own brother freaking out on the other end of the line. "Are you guys on your way to the hospital?" he asked. "Did you get burned? Hit with shrapnel? What the hell happened??" "Calm down, Declan," I said. "Neither of us was burned or hit with shrapnel. We're on our way home. Some guys came in wielding guns and wound up shooting a pipeline." "I'm just so relieved you two are okay," he replied. "Did Sam enjoy his day?" "I think so," I told him. "I was still in shock, so I didn't really get the chance to ask." "Well y'all be careful getting home," he said. "I love you, sis." "Love you too," I said. After hanging up with Declan, I glanced over at Sam and realized his conversation was already over. "Who knew our brothers actually watched the news?" I asked. "Dean and I have always watched the news," he said. "That's how we tend to find some of our cases, you know." "I completely forgot about that," I admitted. "I'm still trying to come to terms with the fact that we just narrowly escaped death." "It's not like you haven't been faced with death before, sweetie," Sam said. "Oh, I know," I told him. "But it still catches me off guard every time." We pulled into the driveway a short time later and I was finally able to move enough to walk myself into the house. We were met with hugs from Dean and Declan before making our way upstairs to the bedroom. Part of me just wanted to crawl into bed, close my eyes, and try to forget this night had ever happened. But it was still Sam's birthday, and I wanted to make sure that, despite our dinner debacle, he had enjoyed our time together. "With the exception of us almost dying tonight, did you have a good birthday?" I asked. "Any birthday spent with you or you and the kids is a wonderful one," he smiled. "Thank you for everything you did today." I leaned in to give him a kiss. "Would you like to join me for a nice bath in the Jacuzzi?" I asked. "Do you really think I would turn down an offer like that?" he laughed. "Even if it wasn't my birthday, that sounds like a great idea." We must have sat together in that tub for at least an hour. When we were finished, we made our way back into the bedroom where I playfully pushed Sam down onto the bed and had my way with him. Before falling asleep in his arms, I hugged him a little bit tighter that night, and thanked God that no one died that night. In fact, we would find out later on that the man who was injured would wind up making a full recovery thanks to that nurse's quick actions.
