Life Of Pie

It seemed like every year I've been with the boys, Dean's birthday sneaks up on us quicker and quicker. The boys were out on a hunt with Dad that morning, and Marissa was over keeping the kids occupied. I had learned since meeting Declan that he enjoyed cooking just as much as me, so I had recruited him to help me make Dean's birthday dessert. "Tell me again why we're making about a dozen pies for one person?" Declan asked. "Because Dean loves pie," I answered. "It's the easiest gift to give him." "I like donuts," Declan said. "Can you make me some for MY birthday?" "If that's what you want," I smiled. "Speaking of which, how come you've never celebrated your birthday since you got here? It's almost as if you just skip it." "Do you even know when my birthday is?" he asked. "Well, duh," I laughed. "Scarlett's birthday is March 21st, therefore, so is yours." "I was just testing you," he winked. "I honestly don't know why I don't celebrate. I guess it's because when I was in the military, it was just another day. We didn't do celebrations, you know?" "Well we are going to celebrate this year, whether you like it or not," I told him. "And I will make you some donuts." "Well alright then," he smiled. "Let's get back to making Dean's pies, shall we?" When we were done, Declan and I had baked about a dozen pies and none of them were duplicates. We had made blueberry, cherry, apple, peach, pecan, strawberry, sweet potato, pumpkin, mince meat, chocolate cream, banana cream, and key lime. Declan joked that Dean was going to wind up hating pie because of me, but I knew that would never happen. We decided to surprise him, so we wrapped all the pies in foil and brought them into Declan's room for safe keeping. "What do we do now?" he asked. "We're going to make dinner for him," I replied. "I decided to make beef and broccoli with rice. I bought some egg rolls from the Chinese restaurant to make with it." "They actually sold some to you?" he was intrigued. "I didn't think they did that." "We're in there enough," I smiled. "We're probably their best customers." "I guess that helps," Declan said. We had a blast cooking dinner together; so much so, that by the end of it we were both covered in oil and spices (a little food fight never hurt anyone). Since we had about twenty minutes before the boys would be home, we both went into our respective bathrooms to shower and get the table ready. We were just finishing setting the table when Dad and the boys walked through the door. "Something smells absolutely delicious," Dad remarked. "Sammi and Declan cooked dinner," Marissa said, giving Dad a kiss. "Which reminds me, Happy Birthday, Dean!" "Thank you, Marissa," Dean smiled. "Are y'all hungry?" Declan asked. "Are you kidding?" Sam asked. "The only thing I've had today was a cup of coffee." "Go wash up and we'll get dinner on the table," I smiled, giving my husband a kiss. I helped Marissa get the kids into the pack and play and she came and helped me put dinner out. "Are those egg rolls from the Chinese restaurant?" Dean asked. "They look eerily similar." "That's because they ARE from the restaurant," I told him. "We're such good customers, I convinced them to sell me a few to go with dinner tonight." Dean went to speak, but Sam stopped him. "I know, I know," Sam smiled. "If I hadn't married her, you would have. Let's just eat, ok?" After everyone had finished eating, Dad and Marissa offered to do the dishes since Declan and I cooked. The rest of us piled into the living room to relax a little before the next course. "That was one of the best dinners I've had in years," Dean remarked. "Thank you both. Best birthday dinner ever." "We're not done yet," I smiled. "We have a surprise in store for you for dessert." "You made dessert?" Dean was excited. "Don't I always make some kind of dessert for your birthday?" I giggled. "You make desserts for everyone's birthdays," Sam pointed out. "She's making donuts for mine," Declan added. "You can make donuts too??!" Dean was surprised. "I love to bake," I admitted. "I've taught myself how to make many different types of dessert." "I'm anxious now," Dean replied. "And ready for some dessert. Can we have some now?" I nodded toward Declan to join me in his room and one by one we brought the pies out to the dining room table. When all 12 were present, Declan helped me remove the foil and, in unison, we said, "Surprise!" "Holy..." Dean said. "That's a lot of pies!" "One dozen to be exact," Declan told him. "My sister says you love pie." "Do I ever!" Dean smiled. "This is definitely the best birthday ever. Thank you so much guys." "It was all Sammi's idea," Sam said. "Wait, you knew about this?" Dean asked. "We all did," Dad chimed in. "Why do you think we had to get you out of the house today? Do you know how many calls I had to make to find a case for us to work on?" "You are amazing, you know that?" Dean said to me. He came over and gave me a big hug and a kiss on the cheek. "I'm sure Sam will agree with me that you find new ways to surprise us every day." "You haven't seen anything yet," I winked. "I'm just getting started." "There's more?" Sam asked. "You said the pies were his present." "That's what she told me, too," Declan said. "I didn't mean for today," I laughed. "I meant for the year. I want to make 2016 one of our best years yet. After all the bad shit we went through last year, we need some sort of relief." "I second that," Dad said. "Although there was one bad situation that resulted in one of the best outcomes ever." "Catelyn," Sam smiled. "I love you all dearly, but there is pie sitting in front of me waiting to be eaten," Dean said. We all let out a huge laugh and then said, "Happy Birthday Dean!" as he began slicing the pies. Despite what had happened only a few weeks earlier, I was truly determined to make this one of the best years we'd ever had.
