After the loss of Dana, Declan became very distant. He rarely came out of his room, he didn't want to go out when we invited him, and he wouldn't even play with the kids. By the time Thanksgiving rolled around, it had gotten to the point where I was the only one who got to see him, since I was the one bringing his food to him and making sure he stayed hydrated. Two days after Thanksgiving (because I try to avoid going anywhere on Black Friday), I had finally had enough. I sent the kids home with Marissa while the boys, Dad, and Mary were out looking for a case. As usual, Declan was lying in his bed looking at the ceiling when I walked in. "That's it," I said. "Get your ass up and out of this bed. You and I are going out today whether you like it or not." "I love you sis, but I'm not up for anything today," he replied. "You're never up for anything ever," I told him. "Look, I get it. You tragically lost the love of your life. We all adored Dana, and we all miss her terribly, but she wouldn't agree with how you're handling her death." "How do you know that?" he asked. "Because she loved you dearly and she would be kicking you in the ass right now for acting this way," I said. "I know that if something ever happened to me, Sam would be just as distraught as you are, but I wouldn't want him to be wallowing like this. I'd want him to go out and do things, be happy, and, if he met someone he could care for again, take a chance on it." "Do you really think Dana would want that for me?" he replied. "I can almost guarantee it," I told him. "She and I were more alike than you realize, specifically when it came to our families. Now get your butt up out of this bed and get dressed. We're going to go out and enjoy ourselves." It took Declan all of ten minutes to get ready and we were out the door shortly after. We started with a nice breakfast at the diner, which had finally been rebuilt and reopened since the fire. From there, we went to the park to walk the track. While we were there, we noticed this woman who was wondering around looking lost. She looked to be about my age and she seemed to be talking to herself. We decided to head over to her and find out if we could do anything to help her. "Excuse me, miss," Declan said. "Are you alright?" "I'm fine," she assured us. "Just not having the best of luck lately." "Why don't you sit down over there on that bench and tell us about it?" I suggested. "If anyone knows anything about bad luck, it's us." "Ain't that the truth," Declan agreed. "My name is Declan. This here is my sister, Sammi." "My name is Deena," she said. Declan and I glanced at each other in amazement; Deena? Dana? That couldn't be a coincidence, could it? "What's got you so crazy, Deena?" I asked. "Well for starters, I'm homeless as of this morning," she explained. "My mother and I got into a huge fight and she kicked me out. She chose my stepfather over me, can you believe that?" "That's terrible," Declan said. "Do you have any family you can stay with?" "Unfortunately my only living relatives all live across the ocean," she explained. "My husband and his brother converted our basement into a living area a few months back," I said. "You're more than welcome to stay with us." "You would do that for a complete stranger?" she asked. "My sister is the most charitable and loving person I know," Declan said. "And I'm not just saying that because she's my sister." "I appreciate that, thank you," Deena smiled. "But if I'm going to say yes, there is one more thing you need to know about me." "As long as you don't moonlight as some kind of a monster, we're good, trust me," I smiled back. "Oh God no," she promised. "Back in May, I went to a party with a friend of mine. We both wound up getting totally plastered and she disappeared on me. I found out later that she got a ride home from some guy, but anyway, long story short, I wound up in bed with some guy who was probably just as drunk as me and well..." She pulled up her shirt to reveal a pretty decent sized baby bump. "Did your mother know you were pregnant when she kicked you out?" I asked. "Of course she did," Deena said. "She was looking forward to having a grandchild. And then she met my stepdad and it was like I didn't exist." "Wait, so they haven't been together that long?" Declan asked. "No," Deena told us. "She met him in July, married him a month later." "Wow," I said. "I am so sorry. You really are having some bad luck. But what about the father of your child? Does he know? Can he help you in any way?" "I don't know who he is," she admitted. "We were both so drunk. I don't even remember what he looked like." "Well you can come home with us," I repeated. "Thank you so much," she smiled. "Let me just go and grab my things from that shed over there." As she walked away, Declan looked at me and said, "Her facial features are eerily similar to Dana's." "I noticed that too," I told him. "This definitely can't be a coincidence." Declan shook his head and then his face went completely blank. "Declan, what's wrong?" I asked. "The party she was talking about," Declan said. "Dana and I went to a party back in May for a friend of hers who was moving away. She was busy helping most of the night, so I was kicking back with the boys, drinking. I was feeling really lousy, so I went to a nearby bedroom to sleep it off. Dana came in a short time later to join me, or so I thought. It struck me as odd that she was drunk off her ass when she was helping host the party, but I went with it because I was a little wasted myself." "Hold up," I told him. "Are you telling me that you think you may have slept with Deena instead of Dana?" "I'm saying that it is entirely possible," he said. "Do you know what this means?" I smiled. "It wasn't coincidence that we found Deena today. It was fate. I would get a DNA test just to be sure, but if what you're saying is true, I have no doubt in my mind that the child she is carrying is yours." "I feel like I betrayed Dana, though," he told me. "You were drunk," I reminded him. "And Deena does look very similar to Dana. If Dana were still alive, I'm sure she would completely understand." Deena came walking back over to us a short time later and we hopped into my car and headed back to the house. After that day, Declan became the person we all knew and loved again. I have no doubt in my mind that Dana played a little role in helping him find happiness again.
