I pulled of the covers and jumped out of bed. The smell of coffee, bacon, and waffles came from the kitchen.
"Yum, bacon!" School ended last week and I'm so happy that it's finally summer. Well, kinda. In 5 days, on June 15th, I will become a full siren. I turn 14 that day. I walked into my small bathroom and sat on the edge of the bathtub. I looked at my ankle. Yep, there are still scales.
"Ew, scales." I mumbled. Each day I wake up, just hoping that the thick, slimy, iridescent scales would have disappeared over night. But that's not the case when your in my shoes. Yep, I'm Lola Montiga: Fish Freak. Of course, that's only my nickname. I then look over to the mirror. Bags under my eyes, knotty hair, and a few scattered freckles. Wow, this curse does take a toll on your body. Im healthy according to my sisters. Yeah, right. Every guy likes them at school. Even with the nasty scales. After all, everyone does believe how they say it's a scar from when they were attacked by a shark. I mean, who believes that? You can clearly tell hat they are fish scales! And I only have one good friend, I don't even show off my scales. Not to mention, I would love to tell my parents what is happening to my sisters and I but how would you?
"Oh, mom and dad. I need to tell you something. So turns out three of your daughters are sirens and I'm about to become one in five days! How cool is that? I mean, now you know why all those ships are being destroyed! Mystery solved."
It doesn't work that way and everything is fine. This isn't a Disney movie. My phone starts ringing. I run to the dresser in my room and pick up.
"Hey Preston."
"Do you wanna meet at the beach later, or something?"
"Uh..." I think that through. Can the transformation happen early? Should I just tell him?
"Sure, do you need to see your mom again?"
"Yeah, she needs to give me something." You may be wondering why his mom is at the beach. Probably not, but possibly. Well his mom is a mermaid. That makes him a merman. Another reason why it can destroy our friendship: sirens and mers don't mix. Natural born enemies, in fact. I brush my long brown hair and put on some makeup. Foundation, bronzer, mascara, etcetera. I need to cover up my siren side. Then I put on a pair of jean shorts and a t shirt. I slipped on my flip flops, grabbed my phone, and ran down the stairs. My sisters were sitting at the table and drinking coffee. I glared at them. I have always held a grudge against them since they made that deal with the Sea Witch. Beauty and power is not everything. And they don't need a spell to do that, just have a healthy lifestyle...like me.
"Good morning, sis. How'd you sleep?" Lara asked.
"Terrible, like every night since you made that deal. Can you just leave me alone?"
"Hey, why are you already dressed?" Loraine asked.
"I'm going out." I responded.
"Ooh, with Preston?" Layla teased.
"We aren't dating!" I yelled. Lara pointed at my feet. I looked down.
"You know, flip flops show your scales." She said. Ugh! Now I can't wear flip flops!
"Here try the Sanuk sandals. They have thick enough straps that will cover the scales. I wear them all the time." Lara suggested. I grabbed them out of her hand and put them on. They were made from yoga mats and were super comfortable. They had black straps and a black base. Nothing to complex.
"Thanks" I mumbled. I walked out onto my porch. The salty air hit my nose immediately. I took in one big breath.
"Ah. Finally some peace and quiet." I walked down the steps and to the beach.
"Hey." I jumped.
"Preston, you nearly gave me a heart attack." I scolded.
"Well, sorry. It's not my fault you have been extremely jumpy lately." He said.
"Well its be--never mind." He shrugged.
"Do you wanna go to see your mom?"
"I already saw her. You took a while. Wanna just hang out?" He asked.
"Sure. Just I have to be home in an hour. My mom needs my help at the café."
"We have thirty minutes then." We both were thinking of the same place.
"Race ya to the cove!" Preston yelled. He started sprinting.
"Hey!" I chased after him.
"Ah!" I cringed. One of my scales ripped off as I ran. It's not a comfortable feeling. I continued running though, otherwise Preston would discover my secret.
"Wow, took you long enough." He joked. I smiled. We sat on top of the rocks and looked out into the ocean.
Hey guys. I think that I'm gonna put Fallen Angel on hold and work on this story. I hope that you liked this chapter and thanks for reading!
