The sun wasn't even starting to color the sky when I woke up. An arm was draped over my middle and I felt Jason's breath tickle my ear. I smiled and rolled over to face him. He was still sleeping and his tattoo drew my attention. He had two other ones besides the mark that he had but the mark is what caught my attention. It was simple but when I lifted my wrist to compare the designs of the two different marks it was perfectly intricate. I traced it lightly with the tips of my fingers and he shifted after several minutes went by.
"Good morning." I say quietly and he smiles.
"It's not even light out yet." he says and I nod.
"It will be soon." I say and we fall silent. I feel him playing with a piece of my hair and I put my hand flat against his chest and feel his steady heartbeat.
"We should get ready." he says finally and I nod but neither of us moves.
"Promise me something." I say quietly and he nods.
"Anything." He says without a moment of hesitation.
"You'll survive this." I say, looking up at his face and he nods.
"I promise." He says and I kiss him.
"Good." I say once I pull away. I get dressed again and walk back to my room without another word. My room was cold since it had gone the night empty and I dressed in my riding outfit quickly, missing Jason's warmth. The sword I had acquired sometime along the way of this journey was leaning against my bed and I pulled it out of its sheath and inspected it. Once I was done I slid it back in its sheath and sat on the edge of the bed. I find myself thinking of the events of last night and I'm thinking of the scene of Jason making fire dance on the ceiling when a knock on the door jarred me out of my thoughts.
"Yes?" I call and the door opens.
"Almost time to go." Lia says and I nod. She leaves and closes the door behind her and I lay back on the bed. After a few long moments I get up and tie my sword to my belt and tie my hair back. I'm sliding a knife into my boot when the door opens again and Joseph stands in the doorway.
"Ready?" He asks and I nod. I follow him out of my room and down the hall to the front of the building in silence. The others were waiting for us and I find myself walking next to Jason towards the dark castle and feel fear take hold of me as we near it. The boys tell us where to go and when to attack and then walk away from us without a second glance back and find hidden places near the gates. It hurt to let them do that without a word but we knew we couldn't let anything cloud our senses so we just hurried to where we were to hide and waited. Two hours passed and dawn was just beginning when the army started its march towards the king's castle. It was long terrifying moments when they were approaching the gates and when the earth exploded everything went to hell.
