I close my locker and collect my backpack. The whole school is alive with Friday excitement. The weekend is here, which means freedom for two whole days. I can't wait to enjoy my freedom, but first I have to make it through dinner with Aunt Kathleen, Mark, and some of his family. I am not looking forward to it because I'm sure he hates me, but I'm willing to endure his hatred if it makes Aunt Kathleen happy. She's done so much for me, she deserves this.

I head home, thinking of Jason the entire way. He and the family had some event at Wayne Enterprises tonight. Something about the company expanding. They had invited me, but of course I couldn't go because of dinner.

After a couple of more minutes of walking, I arrive home. I walk up to the door, grabbing the mail from the doorstep, and twist it open. I walk in to find Aunt Kathleen standing over the kitchen counter with rollers in her hair. She fiddles with the corner of a magazine page, a bouquet of flowers in her other hand. I clear my throat, getting her attention, and she looks my way.

"Hi, Lucy, How was your day?" She smiles.

"It was fine." I take an apple from the fruit bowl.

"Oh, sweetheart, please don't spoil your appetite. Dinner is in only two hours." She pleads. I can tell she is extremely nervous for dinner.

"Sorry." I place the apple back in the bowl, and she smiles. "Who's going to be at this dinner?" I ask.

"Um, let's see, it will be Mark, his sister and her husband, their kids, some family friends, and Mark's parents." Aunt Kathleen answers. I nod. "Ok, since dinner is soon, I really need you to go upstairs and get ready." Aunt Kathleen commands.

"I'm going." I walk towards the stair, ready to go to my room when Aunt Kathleen calls me again.

"And, Lucy, dress nicely." She smiles. I nod and walk upstairs. I go to my room. As soon as I enter, I walk to the bathroom to take a shower.

After my shower, I blow dry my hair and curl it. Afterwards, I go to my clothes and search through, looking for a appropriate dress. Eventually, I settle on a black dress with a loose skirt and quarter length sleeves which fall of my shoulders. After I pull on the dress, I pull my hair into a high ponytail and put on some mascara, eyeliner, blush, and red lipstick. Finally, I pull on a pair of high heels.

Straightening out my dress, I turn to look at myself in the mirror. I actually look pretty. I see it now.

"Lucy, it's time to go." Aunt Kathleen enters my room. "Oh, Lucy, you look beautiful, honey." She compliments.

"Thanks." I smile. "So do you." It's true she does look beautiful. With her form fitting, long sleeve, wine red dinner dress, which goes great with her curled blonde hair that falls around her face. She looks extremely beautiful. For a minute, I wonder if this is what Mom would look like if she were in this position. I wonder if this is what I will look like one day.

"We should go, we don't want to be late." Aunt Kathleen begins to usher me out the door. I am barely able to grab my phone. She pushes me all the way through the house, grabbing the flowers as we go through the kitchen, and then out to the car. "Alright, buckle up." She instructs once we're in the car.

I do as I'm told then we're off.

We arrive at the dinner destination a couple minutes later. It's a nice sized house that looks like it's designed for someone who makes good pay. The garden is nicely maintained, and the windows are spotless.

"Is this Mark's house?" I ask crawling out of the car.

"No, no, this is his sister's house." Aunt Kathleen says. I nod.

We walk quietly to the front door, being careful not to disturb anything in the garden. Aunt Kathleen knocks soundly on the door then steps back. While we wait for someone to open the door, Aunt Kathleen straightens her posture. I do the same. A couple of minutes later, the door opens revealing a lovely lady about Aunt Kathleen's age. She's dressed in a simple dark blue, short sleeve cocktail dress with a floral apron on top. Her bright blonde hair falls in natural waves around her face, stopping at her shoulders. She smiles when she sees us, making her eyes shine. I can already tell she is a cheerful women.

"Hello, hello. Why you must be Kathleen and Lucy." She chirps, her voice light and inviting. Her smile seems to grow.

"Yes, and you must be Jennifer." Aunt Kathleen says.

"Oh, honey, just call me Jen." Jennifer says.

"It's nice to meet you, Jen. We bought these for you." Aunt Kathleen hands the flowers to Jennifer, and she becomes more cheery.

"Oh, aren't you sweet. Thank you. Now, come in, come in." Jen grabs our hands, pulling us into her house. "Dinner's not quite ready yet, so everyone is hanging out in the family room." Jen guides us down a short hallway, and we stop in front of a wide opening. "Here, you just enjoy yourselves while I finish dinner." With that Jen begins walking back the way we came, leaving us in the opening. We don't stand there long before Aunt Kathleen's name is called.

"Kathleen!" Mark exclaims walking over to us. He grabs her hand and kisses her cheek then pulls her off towards the other people in the room, leaving me behind.

'Yep, he totally hates me.' I think. I shake my head, clearing the thought and remind myself it's only dinner. I just need to make it through dinner.
