The Dead Rise

Chapter 16

Carter woke up to the sound of an alarm, his alarm finally he wasn't awoken by a loud noise or someone screaming.
Carter stood up put his clothes on and grabbed his gun belt. He put on a backpack and was about to head out the door before Skylar stopped him.
"Where ya going?" Skylar asked
"I'm gonna go meet up with the Arsenal." Carter said
"Can I go with you?" Skylar asked
"I don't see why not." Carter said smiling
Skylar got ready and they headed out the door. They walked through Denver and out a side road going toward Black Hawk they stopped to loot a house on the side of the road. They walked into the bedroom and Skylar pushed Carter down on the bed. They left about an hour later and continued on their mission. They arrived at a large compound that plainly said "The Arsenal" on the side of it. Carter walked up to a large steel door and knocked. The door opened with a creek.
"Who are you and what do you want with the Arsenal?" A voice said
"Uhh.. Felix sent me." Carter said
"Oh well in that case come on in." The voice said
Carter and Skylar walked into the building and saw it was full of people. Carter found the source of the voice a tough looking guy that Carter personally wouldn't mess with.
"Hi I'm Carter." Carter said sticking out his hand for a handshake
"I'm Axel the leader of the Arsenal." Axel said
"Well Axel its nice to meet you, and nice place you got here." Carter said
"Thanks and thanks, lets go talk somewhere more private." Axel said
They headed to a back room and sat down.
"So your affiliated with the Vikings?" Axel asked
"Yeah, we are gonna take in some people for them because they are running out of space." Carter said
"Well if you're his friend you're our friend, how big is this place you have?" Axel asked
"Well we have a 2 story school just outside of Denver not anything to big, definitely the smallest of the three." Carter said
"Ok what brings you here you could have just radioed us?" Axel said
"Really Felix told me to come here before using the radio, anyway Felix told me that if I need info about groups to ask you." Carter said
"Well as of right now the only people you have to steer clear from are the Horsemen. They will steal everything you own. There's also this little group called the masquerade, don't think you'll have to deal with them though." Axel said
"Ok there's something I haven't told Felix. I was held up by the Horsemen, I didn't have anything to give them so Elliot wants information about the other groups. I haven't told him about you two yet and I can't tell him about the Vikings because of all the stuff they do for the animals. If they die they animals stand no chance." Carter said
"Tell them about us we'll take care of them. That's what we do we protect the aquarium and that's what you have done today by not disclosing information about them." Axel said reluctantly
"Are you sure you can handle it?" Carter asked
"Trust me we have been killing and people since the start." Axel said
"Also Felix said the people at the aquarium cannot fight, don't you think we should teach them, you know just to be safe?" Carter asked
"Yes I do, I'll leave that one up to you." Axel said
"So what was this place?" Carter asked
"It's an old saw mill. We've been using it from the start. It was abandoned before so we thought no one would bother it." Axel said
A kid about Noah's age ran in.
"Dad we got too may zeds on the south side, want me to take them out?" The kid asked
"Yeah, be careful Joel." Axel said
"Well nice meeting you Axel but we gotta go if you ever need me just ask for me on the radio and I'll be there." Carter said
"You can expect the same from me." Axel said
"Thanks." Carter said walking out the door smiling.
"Are you actually gonna tell them." Skylar asked
"It's what they wanted, plus we're gonna be there to help them." Carter said
"Now I don't feel so bad."  Skylar said
"So bad about what?"  Carter asked shutting the large door and walking out into the world
Skylar held up an apple.
"You stole an apple?" Carter asked
"Yep." Skylar said
They both laughed and walked back down to Denver. Carter slashed deadhead after deadhead with his machete and Skylar hit deadhead after deadhead with her spiked bat. As they were walking through Carter went to slash a deadhead and managed to fall down. More deadheads came around the corner, the deadhead Carter tried to kill fell on him. Carter was holding it by its neck.
"Hold on I'll help you!" Skylar yelled killing the other deadheads
Carter squeezed the deadheads neck trying to keep it off him. He squeezed so hard that the deadheads neck imploded causing the head to fall on Carter chest. He knocked it off and stood back off wiping the deadhead blood from his face he ran over to help Skylar kill the rest of the deadheads. After they were all dead Carter sat down on the curb and so did Skylar.
"Thanks for being there for me." Carter said
They leaned in and touched foreheads together.
"I love you." Skylar said
"I love you too." Carter said
They kissed and got back up and continued walking.
They arrived back at the school just before dawn. They ate and went to sleep, the next morning Carter woke up to a knock on the door.
