Chapter 33

"Good morning." Carter said to the group from his box
"I've noticed a lack of conversation around this place, just because we moved away doesn't mean we've disappeared. Talk guys. Ok next, we're good on food, but we may need some food for the horses. So when the time comes Edge I need you to help me with that." Carter said
"Will do." Edge said
Carter walked out the door of the school into the snow, it was still coming down hard.
"Wow it's still snowing." Noah said standing next to Carter
"Yeah, how are you and Grace?" Carter asked
"Eh we're fine how about you and mom." Noah said
Carter closed his eyes realizing Noah's mistake.
Carter opened his eyes up to see a tear running down Noah's face, he turned around  and walked away.
Carter walked back into the school and sat down next to Skylar who was sharpening her knife.
"How are you doing?" Carter said putting his hand on her knee
"Great, its nice to see things are looking up for us." Skylar said
"Yeah, um..." Carter said
"What is it honey?" Skylar asked
"Noah, he accidentally called you mom today. I asked him how him and Grace were doing and he asked how me and you were doing but instead of Skylar he said mom." Carter said
"Maybe he's starting to see me as a mom figure." Skylar said
"He teased up afterwards so if he thinks that he's just not ready for it yet." Carter said
"He'll get there." Skylar said
Marcus searched around for something to poison Carter. He knew he couldn't do it by force he couldn't handle it. He found some kind of tablet that said poisonous if swallowed.
Carter heard a loud commotion outside so he ran out. When he got out there he heard a dog barking outside the gate. He walked over to the gate and opened it slowly and on the other side was a black German Sheppard.
"Cute dog!" Grace said running at it.
Carter grabbed her and pulled he back.
Carter looked the dog in the eyes and it sat down and cocked it's head sideways. Carter looked back at Edge.
"Seems nice enough." Edge said
Carter walked over to the dog and checked its collar. "DENVER COUNTY POLICE K-9" it said
"It's a drug dog." Carter said
Carter kneeled down to the dog.
"Do you wanna come in?" Carter asked
The dog cocked it's head sideways again.
Carter slowly out his hand on its head and started petting it, it fell down and Carter started petting its stomach.
Carter looked back at everyone and smiled. Then the dog growled. Carter looked back and had a gun put against his head.
Skylar started to run at him before Noah stopped her.
"Wait." He said
Carter looked up the gun still at his head.
"You gonna give us our dog back?" The man said
There were five people in total.
"Is it really your dog?" Carter asked
"Yeah, we were about to eat the son of a bitch." The man said
Carter looked down at the ground his breathing intensifying as his anger does.
"If it's your dog what's your badge number?" Carter asked
"What?" The man said
"Ok then it's my dog, it's a police k-9 and I'm a cop. Badge number delta-181." Carter said
"Listen you poor bastard I don't care what you did before, it's our dog we gotta eat." The man said
"What's your name?" Carter asked
"Ryan, what about you?" The man asked
"Well Ryan I'm Carter Daniel and if you don't leave things are gonna get messy." Carter said
"Hehe that's funny look at your people their terrified." Ryan said
Carter looked over and noticed everyone but Skylar. He thought back to teacher her how to shoot the sniper rifle.
"What's his name?" Carter said pointing at one of the guys
"Jacob." Ryan said
"Do you like Jacob more than you like this dog?" Carter asked
"We I can't eat Jacob." Ryan said
"What the hell?" Jacob said
"Well Jacob do you want to die today?" Carter asked
"Not really." Jacob said
"Ok then tell your friend here to leave and never come back." Carter said
"You heard him." Jacob said to Ryan
"Dude shut up we need this." Ryan said
"Ok your choice things are about to get nasty." Carter said
Ryan pushed the gun harder into Carters head.
"You wanna see something cool?" Carter asked
The looked at him.
Carter put up his hand in the shape of a pistol and aimed it at Jacob.
"Ha ha how funny." Ryan said
Carter pulled his hand trigger and a bullet went through Jacobs head.
"HOLY SHIT!" Ryan yelled as him and what was left of his group ran away.
Carter looked up at the snipers perch and gave Skylar a thumbs up.
"Good dog." Carter said petting the dog.
Him and the dog walked defiantly into the safe zone to live another day.
