Chapter 28

"Yesterday we lost a great man, Edge, Skylar and I were on a run team with Denis back in Parkville he always brought up spirits and was overall nice to have around, he will be missed." Carter said jumping off the box
"We need to check that truck, see if it has anything useful then go back to get the stuff." Carter said to Marcus
"Ok I'll be out there." Marcus said
Carter walked out and knocked on the back of the truck.
He heard a zed come to the back, Carter opened the door and the zed fell out and hit its head. It stopped moving so Carter kicked it a bit.
"Is it dead?" Marcus said looking at it
"It was dead a long time ago." Carter said
"You know what I meant." Marcus said
"Yeah it's dead." Carter said
"Holy shit!" Marcus said
"What?" Carter said looking in the back of the truck
"Looks like someone was also planning to build a wall." Marcus said
"Is this everything?" Carter asked
"Yeah, we may need to get a little more but not much." Marcus said
"Let's go tell everyone." Carter said
They ran into the school.
"Good news everyone." Marcus said
"We have the supplies for the wall building can now start." Carter said
"Well let's get to it." Edge said
They moved the supplies to the starting point with a truck. They laid down the first panel and tied some rope to it and the truck. They pulled the wall piece up and put the supports on it.
"Well it's standing." Skylar said
"Once we put the rest of the wall on it'll get sturdier." Marcus said
"I'm glad they're finally building the wall." Noah said talking to Grace in the same room
"Yeah it'll be nice to finally be safe and be able to live again." Grace said
"I kinda feel like the safety of walls will get to us and we won't know how to survive." Noah said
"Let's not let it get to us, we can sneak out everyday and keep on surviving and come back when we're done." Grace said
"That's a good idea but what if we get caught." Noah said
"What are they gonna do? Kick us out?" Grace asked
"Good point." Noah said
Carter and the group were working on the wall when they heard someone yell "Hello!"
Carter looked over and saw a man walking over to them.
Carter walked over to them.
"Hello." The man said again
"Who are you?" Carter asked
"I'm Mike me and my people have a safe zone and we could use the help of people like you." Mike said
"How many people are there?" Carter asked
"50" Mike said
"Can you take us to it and show us?" Carter asked
"Sure." Mike said
Carter looked back at everyone and they agreed as they followed Mike.
"So Mike what's keeping this place running?" Carter asked
"Uhhhh... generators." Mike said
"I meant how is everyone allowed to stay?" Carter asked
"Well the bo... I meant I keep everyone in tip top shape and protect the place." Mike said
"So you lead?" Carter asked
"Yeah." Mike said
"You seem nice." Carter said
"Thanks." Mike said
***flashback***
Wayne sat in front of everyone and had a happy smile.
"Welcome to Parkville, my name is Wayne and I'm the mayor so to say. You are more than welcome to stay here." Wayne said
***end***
"Can we stop and take a break, sorry my leg is hurting." Carter said
Skylar shot him a weird look.

***At the school***
"How would two like to go up in the woods and start collecting some stuff to plant? I think we need to start thinking long term." Zoe said
"Sounds fun." Noah said
"Yeah I'm in." Grace said
They walked behind the school and headed up the hill.
Zoe was digging up some kind of plant when Noah pointed out an apple tree up the mountain a ways.
"Go get some." Zoe said
"Let's go Grace." Noah said pulling her up the hill
They picked some apples and sat under the tree eating.
"Theses are some good apples." Noah said
"Yeah they are." Grace said
Some leaves rustled from down the mountain.
"What was that?" Noah asked
"Probably Zoe." Grace said
Noah looked in that direction and a beefy man came up with a five o clock shadow and a plaid shirt.
"Who are you?" Noah stood up aiming his gun at the man.
"It's fine I already talked to the girl down there she said I could come up here and introduce myself." The man said
"Oh ok then." Noah put his hand out for a handshake and walked toward the guy.
When he got close to the guy he hit the guy with his gun knocking him out p.
"Zoe!" Grace yelled
Zoe came running up the mountain.
"What happened? Who is that guy?" Zoe asked
"He came up here, said he already talked to you I didn't know what to do so I knocked him out. I had to there's no telling what he would have done to Grace or even me." Noah said
"Thank you Noah." Grace said hugging Noah
"Why are you still wearing my clothes?" Noah asked
"I like the way they feel." Grace said
"Lets drag this guy down the hill and tie him up." Zoe said

***Back to Carter***
"When's the last time a zed got in?" Carter asked
"Never they don't even come close to the safe zone." Mike said
***flashback***
"We can't save her!" Carter said dragging Noah away from his that was getting torn apart by deadheads
"No!" Noah yelled
***end***
Carter pulled out his gun and shot Mike in the head.
"What the hell!" Skylar yelled
"Why?!" Edge asked
"Did you think he was telling the truth? No zeds, no death, who sends the leader out to recruit?" Carter asked
"You didn't know if he was lying." Skylar said
"What about when he stuttered over his words? You know what don't believe me keep walking." Carter said
"You didn't have to kill him he could have been telling the truth." Edge said
"I'm keeping you people alive by doing what I think is right. If you think I made the wrong decision find the place and if it exists tell them I killed the leader, tell them where the school is at, they come and I'll kill them all. Not for me but for you Noah, Grace and everyone else that wants to live." Carter said
"Maybe your right." Edge said
"We just won't tell anyone what happened, keep it between us three. I trust your judgement if you felt he was a danger I'm with you on it." Skylar said
"Thank you." Carter said hugging her
