11-One Way Glass Always Screams Sketchy

We walk slowly up the gravel driveway, shoes crunching.

All my nerves are on high alert, and I cautiously hold the crossbow high.

"Stay behind us," Nox tells the younger ones.

"Use your anomalies only if you have to, they don't know who we are, or why we're here. If they find out we're anomalous, they'll be after us in a second," Leila explains to everyone.

We're almost at the front door, and I'm so scared that I can hardly breathe.

"Here, why don't we switch? That looks a little heavy for you," Gray says to Oakley.

Oakley at first hesitates, but then gratefully hands Gray the big wrench, and Gray gives him the much lighter pipe.

As we draw closer to the tinted glass door, I reach out and touch the glass with my thumb.

There's no space between my fingernail and the door.

"That's one-way glass," I mumble. "Get away from the door!" I cry, darting to one side of the door, in a way where if someone looked out, they wouldn't see me.

Mercedes, Leila, and Ryith quickly run to the same side as me, and Gray, Nox, Oakley, and Nora get to the other side.

"How did you know?" Mercedes asks me.

"Well, if you touch the end of your fingernail to the glass, and there's no space between your fingernail and the glass, it's one-way," I explain to her.

"So they could've been looking at us this whole time?" Leila asks, an uneasy look on her face.

I nod.

"We've got to find another way in. For all we know, they could be standing on the other side, waiting for us," Nox says.

"But what is one-way glass?" Ryith asks, tugging on my arm.

"It's glass that you can only see through one side. So on this side of the glass, we can't see through it, it's just darkness, but on the other side of the glass, they can see right through it. So, we can't see them, but they can see us," I explain to him.

He frowns. "They're spying on us!"

"Essentially, yeah," I mutter angrily. A week ago, I was living a blissfully unaware, unhappy life. Now, I'm bringing justice to those that live in fear of these creatures and people.

Sounds kinda cool when I put it like that.

"I think we should find another way in. They'll find us pretty quick if we just waltz in the front door," Gray says.

"Yeah, you're right. We should look around back," Leila suggests.

"Here, we'll come to your side," Nox says. He tucks his pistol into his pocket, and picks up Nora.

Gray goes to help Oakley, but he shoos him away.

"Count of three?" Nox says to Gray and Oakley.

Gray nods. "One, two, three!"

They leap across to our side, and Nox puts down Nora.

"Okay, around back?" Leila asks, leading the way.

Suddenly, I hear a door open.

"Someone's coming!" I cry.

"Up against the wall, don't make a sound!" Nox whisper-yells, and everyone flattens their back against the wall.

My heart is thumping in my chest, and I look beside me at Gray for reassurance. He gives me a nod and a comforting smile that says it'll be okay.

I quickly picture a hologram of a girl, standing closer to the back door. No one anomalous, just a girl I used to know from school.
