I run until it feels like I can't anymore, and I make it to Gray's car.
I leap into the passenger seat, then I gently place KC into the middle seat, between Mercedes and Oakley.
"Are you sure you're alright to drive? I can, if you want," I say, looking at Gray.
"I'm okay, anomalous kids are tougher than most kids," He smiles at me.
If that's true, then I can't even imagine what my injuries felt like to a normal kid, if they hurt so much with me.
"Goodbye, ya sucky, miserable building! I won't miss ya!" Mercedes shouts, saluting to the building out the window.
"I'm all for blowing it up once this tornado's over," I grumble.
"If we're lucky, the tornado will get to it first," Gray says, looking out at the swirling grey mass of death and destruction quickly approaching.
"Wait, look!" Oakley cries, and we all stare out the windows.
My mouth drops open in shock as I watch the tornado start to eat into the building.
Chunks of cement, concrete, wood, bricks, tiles, and just about every material imaginable fly all around.
Hunks of building with the foundation still attached are lifted into the air, swirling around inside the cyclone.
The winds wail angrily, tearing and ripping through the remains of the building.
I glance at KC, who has tears in her eyes.
"What's wrong? Aren't you happy?" I ask her.
"Yes, I am! This is the best day of my life!" She cries happily, and I realize they're tears of joy.
I smile at her.
The moment we feel the back wheels of the car lift up slightly, Gray peels out of there as fast as the Mazda will go, the tires squealing.
Immediately after pulling onto the road, I can tell it's going to be a rough ride. The wind pushes the car back and forth, shoving us into the other lane, then back again.
We haven't yet entered a part where the wind is strong enough to pick the car up off the ground, but just the car swaying back and forth is enough to put my nerves on edge.
The sooner we get home, the better.
Gray keeps driving. The lightning flashes, briefly illuminating the road in front of us, but then it's back to darkness.
Everyone is too scared to speak, so the only sounds are the pelting of the rain against the windshield, and the howling of the destructive winds.
I look through the back windshield to see the twister behind us, almost as if it's chasing us.
How horrifying.
All of a sudden, Mercedes shrieks and Gray jerks the wheel.
"What?" I cry.
I look out the window, trying to see what happened.
"There was a lady standing in the middle of the street!" Oakley says.
"In this weather? Is she mad?" I say, twisting around and looking out back.
Through the windshield, I see a woman standing, right in front of the tornado, staring back at us.
