"W-what now?" Leila stutters, looking at the rubble that was once our home. Beyond the rubble, the setting sun streaks light through the trees.
Beside me, Nora begins to sniffle.
"That w-was our h-home," She sputters, and the tears start flowing.
The rest of us stay silent, and there's only the distant wailing of the winds, and Nora's sobs.
I rub Nora's back, letting her cry. If I had the courage to show my emotions, I'd be crying too.
"I guess..." Gray starts, sighing, "we'll have to find a new home."
Everyone turns sadly away from our broken home, back towards the road.
"I'll get the car," Gray mumbles sadly.
"I'll come too," Nox says, slinging his arm around his friend.
At the end of the gravel driveway, I plop down on the ground, chin in my hands.
I'm so ready to just give up now, but I know we can't. We have to keep going.
The cars roll up, and I get into Gray's.
"Okay, we need a plan," Gray says, putting the keys into the ignition.
"You're allowed to be sad, you know," I look at him.
He pauses. Out of nowhere, his shoulders slump, and he rests his head on the wheel.
"That was my home..." He says quietly, head down.
I reach over and rub his back. I'm really not good at comforting people, that's more Leila's job.
He sits back up, taking a deep breath in.
"Okay, I'm okay now. I think first we should try and find the twins' family, since the new home will only need to hold 8 kids, instead of 10," He says, pulling out.
"Good idea," I turn around, "KC? Do you know your last name?"
She pauses, thinking for a moment.
"I believe it's O'Byrne," She answers finally.
"Alright, that's a good start. Quite unique, which means it'll be easier to find," I add.
"Do you know your mom's name?" I ask.
"It was Alina," She says.
"Now, do you think your family lives around here?" Gray asks her, as we get to the nearest town.
KC shrugs. "It's possible."
"Well, we'll give it a shot," I say.
"Phone booth," Gray nods out the window, and Oakley hops out.
He quickly pages through the phone book inside.
He looks up, and gives us a smile and a thumbs-up.
I jump out of the car, squeezing into the booth with him.
Leila and Nox's car pulls up next to us, and Gray rolls down the window, explaining the situation.
Oakley dials the phone and hands it to me.
I pick it up, and a man's voice answers.
"Hello?" He asks.
"Hello, do you happen to be related to an Alina O'Byrne?" I ask.
"No, I think you have the wrong number, miss," He says gruffly, hanging up.
"Well, it was worth a shot," I sigh, opening the booth door.
