"Don't worry, Leila, I can take care of the lights," Ryith offers, turning on just enough.
When we finally reach the base of the stairs where we originally split up, we stop to rest.
"I'm hungry," Ryith complains, sitting on the stairs.
A chorus of me too's follow.
Now that he mentions it, I'm suddenly acutely aware of the gnawing pain in my stomach.
KC and I open our bags, rifling through them. I pull out 4 granola bars, 2 apples, and a packet of nuts.
I look at the nuts longingly, hoping no one will pick them.
Nora crawls into my lap and grabs a granola bar, and so do Oakley and Ryith. Mercedes and Gray take the apples, and Leila, Nox, and KC all take snacks from their own bags.
Yes! I snatch the nuts, scarfing then down hungrily.
Once everyone finishes eating, we continue up the stairs.
"I think we should stick together from now on," Gray says, looking at Leila with concern.
Everyone agrees, and we reach the top of the stairs.
Now we're back where we started, with the stairs going up and the stairs going down.
"I should tell you, before we got the radio call, we very briefly saw a woman who was tied up in a room. Unhelpfully, I was the only one who saw her, so I can't be sure if it was your friend," KC mentions, "Let's see, she had frizzy, red hair, and looked quite short, and sh-"
"That's her!" Leila cuts her off excitedly.
"Great! Okay, I believe I remember where it was," KC replies, leading us up the stairs.
She guides us through a maze of different halls, and finally, we get to a room.
KC opens the door, and we step in.
No one in here but us.
"I swear, this is where she was!" KC says, looking at us.
"It's okay, we believe you. They probably just moved her," Leila says, smiling at KC.
"Let's just keep looking," I sigh, turning and walking into the hall.
The system we used the first time we broke in is similar to the one we use now, except with much less success.
Empty room after empty room, everyone begins to weaken a little.
Walking slower, smiling less, we're slowly giving up.
I peek into the next room, and my eyes widen.
"There's someone in there!" I squeak, pressing my tall frame against the wall.
"Not Juliette, a kako!" I cry quickly, before anyone else can look in.
The kids all press themselves up against the wall, trying to be quiet.
When things couldn't get worse, another kako rounds the corner, coming face to face with us.
Panicked, we take off running down the hall.
Doing a quick head count, I realize Nox is missing. I look at Leila, and I can tell she knows.
We run under a little archway, where the ceiling gets lower.
Still running, I twist my head around to look behind us.
The kako's still following, but all of a sudden, two hands grab him and pull him towards the ceiling, behind the archway and out of view.
