It started just a regular day. Wake up, go to school, go home,
repeat. The same thing over and over, every day. Nothing really
changed, I grew tired of it. One day, though, something broke that
cycle. I had decided to take a different route home, the grassy one.
That was a problem at first, since, I'm always restrained to a
wheelchair. I was born paralyzed from the knees down. It wasn't bad,
just hard. I always wanted to run and jump like everyone else. The
most I could do was army crawl. Back on the track of this story, I
thought it was a fun idea to go through the fields instead of around
them. Spoiler, it wasn't the best idea.
The ground was rough and rocky, the wheelchair gears making a bunch
of unnecessary noises. The grass was getting caught in my wheels, and
making me move even slower than before."Great idea Shelby, now you get to go home and wash this thing!" I let
out a sigh and looked around, I was too far away from the road to try
and go back. Might as well see where this leads me, I've needed to get
out of the house lately anyway. "Le's go!"I continued, stopping every few minutes to rip the green strings of
annoyance out of my wheelchair. I just started to notice how beautiful
it was out here. The sky, the most magnificent shade of baby blue I'd
ever seen, and the mountains in the distance. They were a dark green
almost black color, that was because of the shadows and the distance
away they were, but I could just barely imagine what it was like in
one of those forests or camps up there.
Suddenly I heard a crash erupt from about 20 feet away. Deciding it
was worthy to check out, I wheeled as fast as I could over to where
the noise came from. It was an aggravating journey over, but after
three stops I had made it.
Standing there, was someone or something I had never seen before.
They were unreasonably tall, roughly 7"9 from what I could tell, and
their skin was a light pinkish orange color. Their hair was short than
their neck and navy blue. They wore a skin skintight suit of blue,
orange, red, purple, yellow and dark brown boots. The humanlike thing
was laying across the ground, not moving. Are they dead...? Quick
movement cut my thought off. The..uhh...thing burst up, four tentacle
like arms shot out from their back, hands at the end that had nails
which were sharped into claws. We made brief eye contact, her left eye
was light blue on the top half, maroon on the bottom half and had a
dark purple pupil. Her right eye, wasn't the same. Their pupil was
orange, the top half was a golden yellow, and the bottom was a forest
green. I had never seen anything like them."Who are you?!" They shouted. Their voice was booming, but had an
unusual elegance to it, yet I could sense fear in their words."My name is Shelby..." I was intrigued by this creature, awestruck even.
"What is your social stance, earthling?" This thing was an alien!
"Uh- handicapped" I managed to stutter through excitement. I never
knew aliens were real!"You cannot hurt me?" Their stance ever so slightly relaxed, tentacles
lowering from their previously ready to rip position."No." I waited for a response, but they kept observing me silently.
"So, who are you?"Their eyes looked away, unsure of what to say, "I don't know"
That helped a lot. I needed something to call them, is it a she? "Are
you a girl or...""I am what humans call female, that I know."
Okay, huh, what should I call her? Hmmm.... "Mack."
"What?"
"That's your name now. If you don't have one, now you do."
"I guess..." We made eye contact again, and I could see weakness and
fear in her eyes. I just noticed that they were lined with tears."Where'd ya come from?"
Her eyes widened Wherever she came from, she clearly didn't want to
go back. I saw her start to shake and suddenly break down, falling to
the ground on her knees. Her multicolored eyes filled with tears, the
salty water streamed down her face as she stayed quiet, letting out
small whimpers."Oh jeeze-... I didn't mean to bother you-...oh God- uh" What did they
do to her? What kind of person thinks of somewhere and breaks down
sobbing?! How do you comfort a sad person... no idea. What do I do?I was saved by one of the worst possible things. Gunshots rang out
around us. Mack started frantically struggling to get herself back
together. I had to fight the urge to run, figuring I couldn't run and
I was basically stuck. My wheelchair couldn't keep moving on these
grounds."What was that?" The only words I managed to mutter to Mack before she
spring into action. Her tentacles flew about, grabbing my wheelchair and somehow keeping
it steady as she took off. Sprinting across the uneven ground at
uncontrollable speeds. The won was blowing my fiery red hair around in
it's ponytail, whacking my face and taking away my vision. All I knew
was that I heard the gunshots continue, getting softer and softer
however, we were getting farther away. The pressure from the speed
knocked me unconscious, and I fell asleep.
I woke up in my bed, at home. My wheelchair placed perfectly in the
corner where I always put it. My favorite blanket wrapped around me
like I love it. My nightlight plugged in, next to my night table. I
was 17 and had a fear of the dark. Not the dark though, just what
lurks in it."What happened?" I sat up and rubbed my head. I couldn't remember how
I got back from school.I crawled from bed, got into my wheelchair, and started inspecting my room. I had the unnerving
feeling that I was being watched. I hated that feeling. I turned my
lamp on with a flip of a switch. As I turned back around, a wide,
multicolored pair of eyes met mine."AHH!" I rolled backwards, and everything came flooding back to me.
The field, the view, the crash, Mack, and the gunshots. "Oh...it's
just you. Hey, how'd you know where I live?""It was on your backpack tag."
"Well that was a good idea."
