“Oh hey, you’re coming back from Japan too?” Thom said.
“This is no coincidence. We are smart enough to realize that much, Thom. If you are here to take us back, then you are going to have to fight me.” Darian challenged.
“I’m not here to take you back. I have a message from Keegan.”
My eyes lit up at his name. What could be so important that he sent Thom, who Keegan, Darian, and I don’t particularly get along with?
“Let me guess, Keegan says that I better be taking good care of Lynette or he will have my head.”
Thom smiled. “Yes actually. Hold on. Keegan wants something else, the bloody dolt.”
We sat there waiting for Thom to speak. I know that’s not the only reason he sent Thom. There has to be a more important message.
“Keegan says hi.”
“What does the raving fool really want?” Darian almost yelled.
“He says that while you shouldn’t come back until school starts, you should be fine once the school year starts in September.”
“Why? What’s changed?”
“He has begun to gain the other leaders’ trust. Amazingly, he is very careful about what he does as leader but very effective. As much as I think Enide should have been leader, and still do, he rose above my expectations. He is a fair leader.”
“What does that mean?” I asked.
Darian explained, “Pretty soon. We won’t have to run anymore. Keegan will be able to convince them to spare my life, and keep you around.”
“How is he able to do that?”
“He’s leader. He will eventually be able to say that we each get one ‘Get Out of Jail Free Card’ and if we ever do anything that stupid again then we have to face punishment.”
I rolled my eyes at the Monopoly reference but it was the best way to explain. “Oh…”
Darian asked Thom, “Do you think he will have that much power in just one short month?”
“My father works with him and Keegan already has my father eating out of the palm of his hand. Somehow, Keegan has gotten everyone to believe in him and to love him. If that tells you anything.”
“Thank you, Thom.”
“Alright, I am leaving. I didn’t want any part of this and I would prefer not to be caught socializing with the enemy. Bye, Darian, Lynette.” He waved good bye and disappeared.
“What was that?”
“Bilocation: the ability to be in two places at once.”
“Are there things less useful than dowsing?”
“Remote Viewing: gathering information at a distance. Psychometry: obtaining information about a person or object. Those are both Jamie’s powers. Then there’s Huey, aura reading: perception of energy fields surrounding people, places, or things. Mediumship: communication with spirits. At least I never lose things.”
“You can lose them; you can just find them again faster than anyone else I know.” I retorted.
“Fair enough.”
