Chapter Forty-Nine
We woke up the next morning and went to breakfast. Rain was at the head of the table with a map of the Canadian cloister and areas surrounding it.
“Ok, so we are leaving for Canada today, we will make our attack in due time, but we have to be prepared. Troops are being sent as we speak to hidden areas around the premises.” He stopped to point them out, “We have a basic strategy set out but we will go over and elaborate once we are in the area.” We nodded and continued our breakfast of feta cheese omelets.
Directly after breakfast we went to the teleporter and all of us teleported to my aunt’s diner.
“Uh guys, not to be a wet blanket but I don’t really want my aunt to see me with ninjas. That would lead me to explain my dead parents and…” I was cut off by Huey jerking my wrist and dragging me along as we ran through the parking lot. There was a shed in back of the diner and we all ran in there. As soon as we were all inside, Enide punched in a code and the floor of the shed opened up and we fell into a system of underground tunnels.
“Whoa.” I gasped.
“Your aunt knows nothing of this, don’t worry.” Jamie said. I nodded and walked with them with my mouth gaping in amazement. I had seen some pretty amazing things but this took the cake. It was a hospital underground. No, it was a corporation underground. There were fancy rooms with velvet couches, there were science rooms. It had everything. There was even a movie theatre down here.
“What is this place?” Alistair asked in equal awe.
“This is the recreational place for the royal cloister families to go. Kind of like the amusement park for the president.” Keegan explained.
“There was a terrible termite outbreak in some of the areas however and it was closed down.” Enide added.
“Ewwww, Termites!” Thom exclaimed.
“It’s our best option so far.” Darian said with a shrug.
We walked through the halls till we found a big living room to crash in. The ninjas all sat on the floor and meditated while the rest of us just sat in thought. I guess we were kind of in a meditation ourselves. I barely noticed Alistair and Harumi get up to leave. I fell asleep for what seemed like four hours, but it was really only ten minutes. I got up and left the room, looking for some water. I walked down the hallway and heard Alistair and Harumi. I stopped and listened.
“Harumi, I-I want to ask you something.” Alistair started.
“Yes Ali.” She replied.
“Will you marry me?” He asked. I put a hand to my mouth to stop a gasp from making noise.
“Alistair,” Harumi sighed, “This isn’t really the right time-“
“I know,” He said, “But I just want to know. I love you Harumi and once this is all over, I want to take you away from all of this. I want to help you start a new life without the stress of a cloister.”
“Oh Ali, that is so sweet. I-I accept.” She said. They started walking my way so I quickly ran to the end of the hallway and waited till they passed. I shook my head. Poor, poor Alistair. He has no idea what Harumi wants out of life.
I finally found the kitchen and got myself a glass of water. Huey was in there. Chilling some beers.
“Huey. When did you and Piper become a thing?” I asked.
“A what?” He shrugged.
“You know, together, a couple.” I said. He laughed.
“Haha, me and her? A couple? Hah! No no, my little lass, she’s just a fling for me and somehow snogging me helps her get over Aces death. I don’t rightly understand it myself but whatever. It’s what Ace…It is what he-he wanted.” Huey looked down and then turned away from me, putting his forearm against the refrigerator.
“I’m sorry, Huey, I shouldn’t have brought it up.” I said.
“No, I’m fine. He was like a brother to me.” He laughed a bit and turned around, his eyes were red, “when he went off on your brother and finally became his own man; that was one of the happiest days of my life. I had tried and tried to make him more assertive to show him that he wasn’t a puppet. And it finally happened. And then he died.” Huey clenched his fists and teeth, “If I ever catch Odion, I will rip his head off with my bare hands. I won’t hesitate either. I HATE him, I know everyone else here probably does too. I have three things I care about: my best mate, my girl, and my beer. And he took the first on the list away.” He wiped his face with his forearm and swallowed.
“Is Piper who you would consider you’re girl?” I asked. He laughed.
“No, that’s Cassidy. She’s my girl but in a friendly way, you know? No, I haven’t been seeing Piper long enough to ‘love’ her. I swear, all you other folk see a person for a week, cry with them and then swear that they are the one you should be with. I don’t understand why you gotta be commiting yourself right now, but whatever keeps you quenched.” He said. I had to smile, because he made a good point.
“But what about all the things that we have gone through together?” I asked.
“Lynette, if you and Keegan make it out of this battle together. Godspeed to ye. But I will be blunt here. If Keegan should fall in battle, don’t hang yourself up on him.” Huey grabbed both my shoulders and looked me in the eye, “I want you to go on with your life, find another good man, get married and have lots of children. And I’m sure that’s what Keegan would want to. But do not convince yourself that you will be together forever, not before this battle is over.” He said, ending it with a kiss on the forehead, “Stay strong little lassie.” He walked away after that. I stood in the kitchen, numb with realization. I didn’t even know I was crying till a tear hit my shoulder. I sighed and wiped them away. Keegan could very well die in this. We all could. A thought that scared me even more: I could die in this battle.
