As I sat on the end of his bed, I couldn’t help but think that I still needed to leave. I could no longer be here to cause problems. I can’t kill anyone else if I am not around. I found a notebook and a pen in his room and wrote him a letter.
Keegan,
I’m going home. I can’t stay here and possibly be the reason others die. If this makes me a coward, then I guess I am, but it’s better than me getting another one of my friends killed because they were trying to protect me. What if it’s you next time? I realize that you don’t care what happens to yourself, but I do. I couldn’t live with myself if you died trying to protect me from Rommuel or Odion. I love you so much that it hurts to write you this. I’m thinking about crumbling it up right this second and begging you to take me back when you wake up. But I can’t do that. No matter how much I want to, and I really want to.
I love you, so much,
Lynette
I placed the letter on his chest and moved one of his hands so that it was on top of it. There would be no way he could miss it when he woke up.
I found Slade fairly easily. I told him what I had done. “Are you crazy?” he asked.
“Ace is dead because Odion targeted me, a powerless person. I’m not going to have it happen to Cassidy or Keegan or Rain or Maria or whoever is there. It’s not like I can be of any use to them anyway. Are you going to come home with me?”
“I’ll go with you. But, I have to talk to Cassidy before I leave.”
“I’ll find Alistair then.”
“He probably won’t come with us. Just saying.”
Alistair was a bit harder to find, but eventually I found him. He was even alone; I don’t know how I managed that. “Alistair, I’m leaving.”
“Where are you going?”“Home.”
“Why?”
“I’m deadweight here. I can only cause bad things, not good. Slade is coming with me, are you?”
“I might as well. I can’t help around here anyway.”
“Exactly.” I mumbled to myself.
“If we see Harumi on the way, I need to tell her though.”
“Slade is off talking to Cassidy, so we have time to find Harumi if you want.”
“Okay.”
I followed him as he tracked Harumi down. I didn’t listen to their conversation but Alistair didn’t seem in such a good mood when we went looking for Slade and Cassidy. We found them alone in a common room.
“Slade, let’s go.” I said.
He replied, “Cassidy says she’ll transport us.”
“I want to qualify that by saying that I’ll do it, but I think you are all stupid for leaving. I know I’m not changing any of your minds though. Well, unless I used my powers, but I won’t do that to you… this time.”
“Thanks for that Cass.” I said somewhat sarcastically.
Cassidy lead as to where we had transported in. There was a control panel on one of the ways. She told us to stand in the middle of the room and went to it. “Texas, right?”
“Preferably somewhere near Dallas, Cass.” Slade requested.
“Okay, okay. Now you’re just being picky.” She teased.
The door flew open and Cassidy hit the button to send us away. Keegan stood in the doorway with my letter in his hand, dumbfounded. He hadn’t believed I would actually leave.
“I’m sorry.” I cried.
We were gone and I didn’t even know if he had heard me. Not that it mattered anymore. He wouldn’t want anything to do with me after this.
We appeared by the abandoned shack near my house. I should have known this was a psychic shanty. It makes perfect sense now that I think about it. At least I knew how to get home from here.
