A/N I'm on spring break hence all the updates :) more to come~

A few hours later Dan and Phil arrived in their hometown. Covered by the veil of the night and guided by the moonlight, the two boys tiredly trekked on towards their hideout.

"Phil?" Dan spoke, breaking the silence of the night. The gravel crunching under their every step.

"Yes?"

"Where do you suppose we should get food? Won't our faces be on the news by morning?" Dan asked.

"I don't think so." Phil replied. "I've been thinking. The asylum is crooked, if word of us got out they would have heaps of authorities asking questions. I doubt they want anything to get out and I doubt their investors want to pay for private investigators. I'll be safe going out for food at certain times, but people in this town remember you and they don't exactly like you, so you should stay away from town."

Dan nodded solemnly.

"I'll get food for us early in the morning. I'd like to stay hidden as well, my parents think I'm interning and they'll have a lot of questions if I'm suddenly seen walking around town."

"Thank you Phil." Dan said, kicking at the gravel.

"For what?" Phil gave him a tired smile. Even in his completely exhausted state, the curly haired boy could make him smile.

"For giving me a chance. For protecting me. For helping me. I'm just so glad to have you back." Dan smiled back.

"I couldn't see myself being happier anywhere else than I am right now, walking in the middle of the night for miles in the cold with you. It's all worth it to me. And as soon as we can get rid of all the asylum investors, we can move far, far away from here. I'll take you anywhere you want to go. I promise." Phil still felt like he had some sort of duty to bring happiness to the other boy who's entire life had been less than ideal.

Dan grinned that grin he does that reaches his eyes and pops the dimples on his cheeks.

"You can't take me to the moon." Dan challenged.

"Yeah? Try me. I'll even bring the moon to you if that's any better."

Dan snorted.

"That's the cheesiest thing I've ever heard."

Phil lightly slapped Dan's shoulder. "Hey! Don't act like you didn't love it." He nudged Dan playfully and Dan could barely hide his blush.

Dan suddenly stopped in his tracks. Phil stopped too and followed his gaze.

"I'm surprised they didn't tear it down." Dan said, staring at the familiar building.

"I guess it was just so far from town they didn't think it mattered." Phil shrugged.

The boys trudged up to the old barn and Dan cautiously went in first. His old lock and chains lay broken on the floor probably from the police raid. He dropped his back at the door as Phil shined his phone light inside. All of his tools were gone and his old table was no where to be seen. It looked like everything with blood on it had been confiscated. Dust covered his old makeshift counter and hay still covered the floors. A stray item caught Dan's eye and he wandered over to it. He gasped when he reached it, recognizing the old dusty school bag immediately.

"Why is that here?" Phil asked from over his shoulder.

"This was mine." Dan smiled, blowing the dust away. He opened the bag to find a familiar folder hidden inside.

"Is that from-?"

"Yeah."

"Why would you keep that here?" Phil asked, recognizing the bag and folder from their very first encounter together as children.

"As a reminder." Dan carefully placed the items back.

"Of what?"

"Of why I was doing what I was doing." Dan explained, doing his best to not upset Phil.

"Oh." Phil connected the dots and gulped, turning away to busy himself with his and Dan's things.

"Phil if it's ever too much, you can tell me. You know that right? I don't expect you to just accept these things. Those were my mistakes; I don't want you bearing my burdens." Dan reached out and put his hand on Phil's shoulder.

"I know and I'm fine, it's just I haven't really thought about any of this for so long. I repressed it as best as I could and being here makes it so...real."

"I'm sorry Phil."

Phil shook his head.

"Don't be. We both made mistakes but that's behind us now."

"Okay." Dan nodded and kneeled down next to Phil to help him lay out blankets from the asylum over the tufts of hay. They made pillows by bundling larger amounts of hay under the blankets and the makeshift beds honestly weren't that bad.

As the night was cold and there were limited amounts of blankets, Dan and Phil opted on sharing and cuddled close together.

Dan held Phil close like he had done back in his room in the asylum. Except now he had no worries. Sure they weren't exactly out of danger yet, but he still felt safer than he had in a while.

This was their life from now on and, honestly, it wasn't that bad.
