Dan. Dan was here. He was alive and he was standing right in front of Phil. Standing and breathing.
Phil hid his surprise with a small grin. He couldn't let anyone know he knew a patient, or he wouldn't be able to work with him. Did he want to work with him? Maybe... He could finally get some closure and forget.
The guards roughly threw Dan in the chair across from Phil. He stared, wide eyed, and perhaps just as confused.
"We'll leave you to your work, he can't get out of the jacket so don't worry. If you need anything just call out, there is always a guard or nurse nearby." Ms. Jen followed the guards out and shut the door, leaving behind a long silence. Phil opened his mouth, but no words came out.
"Phil? Is....is that you? Are you really here?" Dan asked softly. He squirmed a bit in his seat from the straitjacket holding his arms behind his back.
Phil nodded, still wide eyed and trying to form words.
"What are you doing here? Are you here to see me?" Dan asked, a glint of hope in his eyes.
Phil shook his head and Dan's face fell slightly.
"I'm interning here. I didn't even know...I thought you were dead." Phil almost whispered the last part.
Dan nodded slowly, his fringe falling over his eyes. He flicked his head and blew at the brown locks, trying to move them.
Phil grew impatient waiting for Dan to answer and stood up, leaning over the table. He moved Dan's fringe back and sat down again.
"Thanks." Dan blushed.
"How are you alive and in front of me right now?" Phil asked.
"Well that night when I, you know... died in your arms. I actually did die, but the medics tried a defibrillator on me and it worked. I was taken away in the ambulance and recovered under police supervision. I plead insanity and so they sent me here. I've been here for the last few years. I assumed you knew."
Phil took in everything Dan had just told him. His breath shortened and he felt like he was getting no oxygen. People must have known that Dan had survived, but no one told him. He guessed it was to protect him, but now it was hitting him all at once and he didn't know how to handle talking to Dan.
Phil looked down and swallowed, trying to regain some composure.
"Phil?" Dan spoke, studying Phil from across the table.
Phil sighed and looked back up at the face of all his nightmares.
"I'm sorry I shot you." Phil spoke in a monotone.
"No, you shouldn't be. I deserved it. I know what I did was wrong now and I regret it. You shot the old me and I'm a different person now. That guy...that psychopath is dead." Dan said, sadly.
"But nearly killing you made me no different."
"It was accidental. You panicked. You are too sweet to ever be like how I was, Phil." Dan blushed when he realized what he had said.
Phil looked indifferent. He decided the only way he would sanely get through this is by being professional and focusing on his job.
"Well that's the past. Now I'm here to assess you because apparently you won't speak to the doctors around here. Can you explain?" Phil picked up his pen, writing a few things.
Dan shook his head and stared daggers at the door where he knew the doctors and nurses were.
"Why won't you speak to the doctors Dan? They're just trying to help." Phil prodded.
"They don't care, Phil. They're not as nice as they seem. They treat us like wild animals." Dan grit his teeth and averted his eyes to the table.
"What do you mean?" Phil perked up from his notes, studying Dan's actions.
Dan shook his head and sighed. He seemed to be thinking about something.
"Dan?"
Dan jumped a little and looked up from his thoughts, giving Phil a small smile.
"I've missed you, Phil."
Phil's breath hitched and he averted his gaze back to his notes.
"Dan you need to understand that I'm only here to assess you. When I'm finished, I'll have the experience I need, and I'll return to school to get my degree." Phil dared to look up again and saw a flash of sadness on Dan's face that he quickly covered up with a small smile and a nod.
"So, Dan can we please start from the beginning? Tell me about your childhood. Do you have any significant memories of when you were young?" Phil asked.
"I don't remember much; I was adopted at a young age. I never found out who my biological parents were, but I've always considered my adoptive parents and their family as my only real family." Dan answered.
Phil lowered his pen.
"You never mentioned you were adopted before." He said softly.
Dan gave him a small smile and shook his head, "I guess it never crossed my mind. I was too infatuated with you, I never really thought about it."
Phil nodded and took some more notes.
"Is there anything else about your childhood you would like to talk about?"
"I remember in school I never had any friends and I was bullied quite a lot. Until I met you..." Dan trailed off, smiling at the memory of the time they first met.
"And would you say that's when your obsessive behavior began?" Phil asked. Dan slowly nodded.
"Looking back, is there any particular moment from your childhood that you think might have led up to the obsessive behavior?"
Dan stared at the tabletop, thinking long and hard.
"At the orphanage, I had a brother..." He began after a few minutes, his tone going solemn.
"I don't remember much about him, but he was my biological younger brother and I remember we were close."
"What happened to him?" Phil asked, softly. He had no clue about any of this. He realized Dan had never told him much about himself when they were together and he felt almost sorry for him. No matter what he's done, no one deserves to lose the people they care about. Even though he had been responsible for taking away many of the people Phil cared about in high school. Phil was just too nice to not feel sorry for him.
Dan stared at the table and squirmed a bit in his jacket.
"I don't want to talk about it." Dan mumbled, a single tear escaping.
Phil scrunched his eyebrows in worry. What could have happened to Dan's brother? Had he been adopted by another family? He could tell it was a touchy subject for Dan so he nodded, understandably.
"Okay. We don't have to now. Should I end the session for today?" Phil asked, keeping his tone soft in an effort to calm Dan down.
"Honestly, I'd rather not. I'd rather stay here with you than go back to my room." Dan spoke.
Phil thought for a moment of what he should do. He wasn't sure how much longer he could stand to be around Dan, but he knew he had to gain Dan's trust somehow, if he was ever going to fully cooperate with him.
"Okay Dan. We can stay here for a little longer." Phil gave him a small smile and he perked up a bit.
This was going to be a long month for Phil.
