"What do you mean?" Dan asked, sounding a bit off to Phil.

Phil sat up a bit straighter, still securely wrapped in Dan's arms. He wished it wasn't so dark so he could see his face.

"My dreams. H-how do you know about my nightmares?" Phil asked, his whispers piercing through the dark and silence.

"Your nightmares? I didn't know- I don't understand."

Phil took a slow, deep breath. He knows. He know he know he knows.

"Phil, what's wrong? Please tell me." Dan moved closer. Phil didn't trust this. Not one bit. Was this even really Dan holding him? He couldn't see him; he couldn't be sure. He couldn't. be. sure.

Phil began to violently shake, wanting to run out of the room, but not exactly knowing the way to the door.

"Phil!" Dan whispered loudly; or at least it sounded like Dan...and felt like Dan.

"Please tell me what's wrong. I don't know how to help you." Dan sounded worried now. Maybe like he was crying? Phil felt his heart sink in his chest.

"Dan I think I'm going crazy. I don't know what's real. Are you real?" Phil sobbed, clutching onto Dan's, or whoever's, shirt.

"Of course I'm real-" Dan pried Phil's hands away and moved them to his face,  "I'm right here. Im not gonna hurt you or leave you. I promise."

Phil could only nod, though Dan couldn't see it in the dark. He ran his thumbs over the soft curvature of Dan's cheekbones.

"You're not crazy. Neither of us are." Dan reassured; slowly sliding his hands down Phil's arms. His hands were warm against Phil's ice cold skin. He carefully wrapped his arms around Phil's waist again and rubbed circles into the protruding skin above his waistband.

Phil allowed himself to breath normally again.

"Then why am I hearing things? Why am I so afraid?" Phil asked.

"You're stressed; and sometimes normal people hear things. It's perfectly normal." Dan replied.

Phil lowered his hands to Dan's chest. His heart was beating, and he was definitely real.

"Yeah...okay. Thank you Dan."

The two boys laid back down on the bed and Phil rested his head over Dan's beating heart. Dan ran his fingers through his hair.

"Dan? Can I ask you something?" Phil asked, hoping Dan wasn't already drifting into sleep

"Anything." Dan replied.

"Do you still hear things?" Phil asked.

Dan took a few moments to reply.

"Yes and no."

"What do you mean?" Phil asked.

"I do hear voices yes but the medications the doctors give me here make them whisper."

"Oh. Do you think that once we leave this place together the voices will be worse?" Phil asked.

"I suppose so." Dan answered.

"What if we left right now?" Phil asked.

Dan took a deep breath. Phil's head lifted and lowered with the steady rising and falling of Dan's chest.

"I don't think that would be a good idea." Dan finally answered.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean...what if we did just up and leave? What good would that do us?"

"We would be together and free from this awful place." Phil answered, growing a bit defensive.

"Don't you get it Phil? We'll never be free. We'll be wanted criminals, living in hiding for the rest of our lives. Is that really what you want?"

"I thought you wanted to leave more than anything?" Phil asked.

"I do...Listen Phil, let's talk about this tomorrow, yeah? We both need sleep."

"But we don't know what tomorrow will bring...or the next day... or the day after that. How long are we gonna wait, Dan? I only have so much time here left before I get sent back to uni and I'm not leaving you alone here if that happens."

Dan softly ran his fingertips behind Phil's ears. He felt himself relax slightly at the tender touch, but he wasn't done arguing his point. Dan needed to understand that Phil's mind was made. He was willing to trade his freedom for Dan. He was willing to do anything for Dan.

"Are you absolutely sure that you're willing to face the consequences?" Dan asked, apprehensively.

Phil lifted his head and stared in the general direction of Dan's face. He could feel the other boy's warm breath against his nose. He raised his palm to Dan's cheek and kissed him in the cold, dead silence. A kiss of agreement. A sealed contract between them and them only.

Phil pulled away, his lips already protesting without their other half.

"I'm sure."
