Jungkook's POV
I thought it was going to be the end of my story that night, but it was someone else's; it was hers. You could not imagine the shock I felt when I woke up once again to IVs plugged into my body, a nurse sitting by my side, a clipboard in hand. I blinked twice, then three times, apparent confusion on my face. The nurse must have realized that I had woken up, for she looked up from her clipboard, a small smile on her face, "Good morning Mr. Jeon. How are you feeling?"
"Am I dead?" I asked the nurse seriously, and her smile twitched for a second, before she replied patiently,
"No sir, although it is a miracle that you are still alive." The nurse glanced to the right of me, and I followed her gaze. An envelope laid on the bedside table, wrapped with a lavish red ribbon. I tried to reach for it, but the nurse blocked my hand before I could, "Miss Park had told me to only let this letter be read when your friends are here."
I looked at her oddly, "Chaeyoung? I thought she went off to Australia to pursue dancing?" The nurse did not offer me a reply, but she smiled solemnly.
"I believe Miss Park has provided all her answers in the envelope." A soft knock resonated in the room and the nurse stood up from her stool, "If you'll excuse me, I believe you have some visitors."
Some was an understatement, for when the nurse opened the door, nine people came in, all with crestfallen expressions. The nurse offered each member of the group a smile before leaving the room.
Nothing could be heard for a few moments before I decided to speak up, noticing a missing member, "Where's Chaeyoung? I heard she paid me a visit."
The group all glanced at each other, and after a few moments, Yoongi stepped up, "She's gone Jungkook."
I grinned, relieved, "So she's made it to Australia, huh? She's finally pursued her dream."
Jennie, who had been looking at the floor ever since she entered, lifted her face up, and to my suprise, tears were glistening from her eyes, and when she spoke, her voice sounded hoarse, "Not like that Jungkook. She's really gone gone. Gone like she's no longer in this world anymore Jungkook."
My grin dissolved into a frown, and I glanced towards Taehyung's direction to see if he was laughing, but I was met with eyes harboring dark eye bags. In fact, everyone looked like they've been crying.
"How? When? There's no way she just disappeared like that." It still had not hit me that Chaeyoung was gone, and I refused to believe it.
Jisoo walked towards the bedside table and picked up the letter that I tried to grab earlier, "We would try to explain, but it's still too soon," Jisoo looked up at me with red bloodshot eyes, "here, she left this for you."
I took the letter from Jisoo's shaking hands, and read through the letter. Silence broke through the room as I read through the letter.
"No. No no no....." I shakily said, as I looked up from the letter, "please tell me this is all some sort of sick joke. Please tell me that Chaeyoung is outside that door, waiting to tell me that this is all a prank." The room was beginning to blur, and I realized that tears were forming in my eyes.
"I'm sorry Jungkook, but we tried to stop her. We really did, but she was already invested. You know her, once she's decided on something, it's hard to convince her out of it. She never told us until she was minutes away from the surgery." Lisa explained, and even through my blurred vision, I could tell that out of everyone, she was in the worst state. Lisa was always thin, but now she looked like she was nearing danger in her current state. Her and Chaeyoung were the closest.
My whole body was now shaking in grief, still not believing that Chaeyoung was no longer.
"Why did she do that? She had so much ahead of her!' I exclaimed as tears dripped down my face, "she had her dream right in front of her!"
"No Jungkook, she wasn't pursuing her dream, she was pursuing yours. For your sake," Lisa said, "She knew you loved dancing, but since you were unable to, she took that burden and danced in your pla-" Lisa stopped as a loud sob escaped her mouth. Taehyung wrapped his arms around Lisa, whispering soothing words into her ear to calm her down.
"She was never an idiot. She only became an idiot after she met you. An idiot that was hopelessly in love." Lisa managed to choke out, her voice cracking.
"Yet she was most happiest with you," Jisoo perked up to the side, "she gave her life because she loved you so dearly Jungkook, yet you never noticed... you dense idiot."
Jisoo and Lisa's words made me realize something. I loved her. I just never realized. I didn't know that waiting for her messages in anticipation late at night was love. I didn't know that the warm feeling deep in my stomach when she smiled the most beautiful smile was love. I didn't know that her laughter, which was like music to my ears, would immediately brighten up my day. I didn't realize how much I loved her, and now it's too late. I'm sorry Chaeyoung. I promise that I will shower you with so much love in our next lifetime. I promise you that we will not meet in these circumstances where only one of us can live. I promise you that I will try my best to protect you. Thank you for giving a man like me another chance in life, for this is the best birthday and Christmas present someone could ever give me. Merry Christmas, Chaeyoung. I love you.
