just a quick doodle of- you know what, I ain't even gonna say her name.
Because I'm teetering on whether or not i should change it to something more fitting.
Back when I first made... her, she was 100% inspired by narwhals. With her helix-shaped horns, helix-inspired symbol, heck and even her last name was literally HELICA FOR HELIX. (Wynfri was made up, but I wanted it to start with a W and be fairly whimsical.) OH, AND HER LUSUS IS A BILATERALWHAL. A TWO-HORNED NARWHAL.
But after a while, I changed her up a bit so that she was more mermaid-inspired. I did this because I felt that the narwhal features didn't really fit her as well as they could have. (Also, her symbol was a little, how you say, odd looking.)
Her horns are now shaped like a mermaid's tail fin, her symbol was changed to an abstract mermaid of sorts inspired by astrological signs, and her last name was changed to Syreni (which is Latin for mermaid).
But now I'm considering changing her first name. And the name I have in mind is Loreli.
I'll bet you're wondering exactly why I'm considering this change in the first place.
Well, I'll tell you.
Loreli is derived from the Lorelei. Now, the Lorelei has multiple meanings, all of which fit very well in the context of Ms. Syreni. First of all, Lorelei is the name of a high, steep slate rock in the Rhine River in Germany, coming in at an astounding 433 feet tall. Now what importance does this German river rock have? To begin, the rock is the location of many a folktale in which a feminine water spirit (somewhat akin to a siren) is rumored to lead sailors to the edges of cliffs with their beautiful voices, causing those attracted to fall to their deaths.
The name of the water spirit in questions is actually Lorelei as well. And in German, the proper spelling of the word is Loreley. This actually makes sense with Ms. Syreni's Quirk, of replacing Y's with I's, similar to how Lorelei is spelled with a Y in German instead of an I.
Another reason not pertaining to the history of the Lorelei is that Wynfri (Win-FREE) when pronounced (at least to me) sounds far too similar to her last name, Syreni (Sih-REN-eeh). On the other hand, Loreli (pronounced the same as Lorelei, being Low-RUH-lye) is just different enough to keep good ol' mertroll from becoming a Mary Berry situation, or even worse, Amelia Bedelia. (those books were the jam tho.)
So what do you think? Should I change Wynfri's name from Wynfri to Loreli? Be sure to let me know!
