⚠️WARNING: ART TALK AHEAD. TURN BACK IF THIS STUFF DOESN'T INTEREST YOU.⚠️The whole coloring process for Nano's portrait was... certainly something. Since their design at first was mostly limited to various shades of neutral grey (I.e. lighter and darker shades of black without any additional colors), trying to add interest and differentiate from other characters would be nearly impossible. So I decided to add in a lot more warm grey, contrasting the more cool gray shades of the other characters. But switching to warm grey was still a little finicky, because if I used too many warm colors their palette would look too similar to Simon's. So to keep with the whole grey theming without crossing the line to Simontown, I limited the darkest shade of red to Nano's eyes and stuck with nice warm grey shades throughout.
Another design choice I want to bring up is the eyes. In all my drawings as of late, the inking for the eyes is just a little thicker than the rest of the ink, to sort of bring out the eyes and give them a noticeable pop. But for this picture, I actually focused most of the thickness toward the bottom of the eyes to give a more baggy, sleepless expression.
*silent screeching* I ONLY HAVE ONE LEFT TO DO, AND IT'S FOR BIRDBOI
AFTER THAT I CAN FINALLY GET THE BIO TRAIN ROLLIN'
