HAPPY NOOB YEAR!!!!!
What's your resolution if you have one? Mine is simply to improve my art. Boring, I know, but it's really all I want to do this year.
So to get started, I drew up some quick facial/anatomical studies.
Some may be asking, why would I even bother with studying realistic bodies and faces if my normal style of drawing is cartoony and exaggerated? How the heck does this help at all?
Well, dear reader, I'm doing this because currently I think the way I tackle anatomy is far from perfect, and I want to improve. If you want to master cartoon anatomy, it's important to study real human anatomy in order to get a feel for certain proportions and the ways our bodies are set up before I can exaggerate to fit my style. There's a fine line between making something look stylistic, and making it look like you have no idea what you're doing.
For example, legs are always something I tend to struggle with. When I was first starting out (late elementary), legs and arms were tiny nubs attached to an undersized body holding up an ENORMOUS head. Later in my art life (late middle school-early high school), my characters' legs were T H I C C and L O N G G . So long, in fact, that the legs were as long (if not longer than) the head and torso. The way I draw legs now are uniform in shape and kind of noodle-y, but I want my legs to look more shapely and interesting rather than looking like bendy straws. So studying the way real human leggies look will help me get a better grasp on how they're set up, so I can later exaggerate them to fit with my style.
Other areas of work that realism studies could possibly help with are hands and body types. Just know that usually taking some time to study real human anatomy can REALLY help make your drawings look better.
Okay, artist tangent over. Happy 2018, here's hoping it won't be a flaming pile of death!
oh who am I kidding its probably gonna suck but I'm going to go in with a positive mindset. aint nothing gon get me down. bring it on 2018. bring it on ya little weasel
