1955

Today's my first day of school. I turned six two months ago and I'm going into the first grade.

My friend Ponyboy and I have been friends since the beginning, our parents knew each other when they were growing up.

I'm an only child, so my friends are basically my brothers.

I've grown up with my friends Sodapop, Ponyboy and Darry Curtis, Johnny Cade, Keith 'Two-Bit' Mathews and Steve Randle.

I'm Charlotte, but it's Charlie for short.

"Mummy!" I called, running into the kitchen.

"Good morning, sweetheart!" She greeted.

"Can I eat now?" I asked.

"Let's get you dressed first," Mum said.

We went into my room and she helped me pick out a nice outfit, then I changed and went back into the kitchen and sat down to eat.

"Where's Daddy?" I asked.

"He left," Mum said.

Daddy doesn't really see me much. He's always at his job. I love my dad and I make the most of the times when he's home. My parents fight sometimes. My mum doesn't like it when daddy brings alcohol and cigarettes into the house, even though she likes to have a cigar and a glass of wine or champagne every now and then. Dad gave me a taste once, Mum wasn't happy about that. Sometimes dad comes home at night smelling like the perfume testers I smell when I'm at the department store with Mum.

When I finished my breakfast I went into the bathroom. I grabbed my toothbrush and brushed my teeth. I took my hairbrush and brushed my hair.

When I arrived back in the kitchen, I swung my bag over my shoulders.

"Let's go!" I said excitedly.

We got into our car and my mum drove me to school. I went to get out and Mum did too.

"I can go in by myself, Mummy," I said.

She laughed and gave me a hug.

"Have a good day, baby. I'll pick you up afterward," Mum said, giving me a hug and a kiss.

I was excited, but also nervous.

I walked over to the front courtyard of the school. Then I saw my dark-haired best friend.

"Pony!" I called.

"Charlie!" He called back.

We ran towards each other and he hugged me, then the bell rang.

Our teacher is Mr. Brady. I like him, he's nice. First we sang songs, then we read books. Mr. Brady partnered us up to draw. I was with a girl called Emma. I liked her, she was nice.

Emma drew a picture of a red rose and I drew a daisy. I decided to make it a blue daisy because blue is my favorite color.

Soon came snack time, and Mr. Brady gave out cheese and crackers.

Then we had free time. I went to get some crayons and paper, then Pony dragged me to a table across the room.

"I'm gonna draw you, Charlie," he said.

"And I'll draw you," I said.

I've always liked drawing. First I drew Pony's face, then his eyes, then his hair.

"It's break time everyone!" Called Mr. Brady.

Everyone headed outside but me. They all called me to come and play outside but I wanted to stay inside and draw.

After a while, Pony came back.

"What are you doing inside?" Asked Pony.

"I'd rather be in here," I said.

"Okay, I'll stay too," he said. "I'd rather be with you than the other kids."

And that was the moment when Pony chose me over all those other people. From then on we were going to be best friends. The two of us, for a long time.

"Do you like drawing?" Pony asked.

"Yeah, I do," I told him. "Do you?"

"Sort of, I like writing more though," Pony said.

"Maybe you could be one of those people who write books one day?" I suggested. "My mother told me about them, but I forgot what they're called."

"An author?" Pony asked.

"Yeah!" I said cheerfully. "I'm sure you'd make a great author."

"Thanks, Charlie," Said Ponyboy. "What do you wanna do when you're older?"

"I wanna be like my mum," I told him. "She told me the best thing in life is love. So I want love. I also want to be a nurse so I can help people. Like the people that helped my grandma when I went to visit her when she was sick in the hospital."

"Love sounds amazing," said Ponyboy dreamily. "Have you ever had love?"

"You don't have love, silly," Mr. Brady said, overhearing us. "You fall in love."

"Well, I want to fall in love," I said.

"Me too," agreed Ponyboy.

Mr. Brady laughed and gave us each a pat on the back and ruffled our hair.

After that, we went outside and played with all the other kids. They were really fun and nice. We played tiggy, then downball and then dead fish.

After the break, it was circle time and we had to share one thing about ourselves that no one else knew.

After the circle had done one rotation, parents started arriving.

"Did you have a good day?" Mum asked.

"I loved it," I replied.

"We're taking you home, Pony," Mum said.

"Yay!" Exclaimed Pony.

When we arrived at Pony's house, I walked him in.

His older brother Darry answered the door.

"Hey guys, how was school?" Asked Darry.

"Great," Pony and I said in unison.

"Bye, Pony!" I said, giving him a quick hug.

"Bye, Charlie!" Called Pony as I ran down the steps and back to my car.

"Is Daddy home?" I asked Mum as I walked into my house.

"No sweetheart. How about you go to your room and play with your toys and I'll make you a snack?" Mum suggested.

Something was up with my Dad, I rarely saw him. Even if I didn't have a full-time dad, I had my friends. They were always there for me.

it's hard to write in a six-year-old's point of view so that's why it's written kinda weirdly lol. but trust me, the more they get older, the better the story will be. thanks for reading :) <3.
