1959

"What are you guys doing?" Asked Johnny as he, Ponyboy and I approached a group of boys who looked a bit younger than Pony and I were as we walked across the grassy field.

"We're playing snap," said one of the boys.

There were three of them and they all had shaved heads.

"Bye," one of them said, obviously wanting us to get lost.

"That's not nice, you should learn some proper manners," I joked.

One of the boys stood up and looked me up and down.

"Wow, kid," he said in awe.

"Shut up," I said, rolling my eyes at this perv.

"She's ten and you're like eight!" Cried Pony.

"I'm actually twelve, and I live in a boys home with older boys so I know things I shouldn't," he said.

"And think things you shouldn't!" Pony snapped, pulling me away with Johnny following behind.

The three boys followed us.

I felt that kid slap my ass hard, well I assumed it was him. When I turned around, that was confirmed.

"Fuck off," I snapped.

"What's going on?" Asked Pony.

"He slapped my ass," I said in disgust.

Pony looked angry.

"Listen kid, you-" Johnny started to say until the kid pushed him to the ground.

"Are you okay, Johnny?" I asked, helping him up.

"I'm fine," Johnny assured.

"You three, fuck off now," spat Pony.

The three of them walked off, leaving Pony, Johnny and I laughing our asses off.

"What do you guys wanna do?" Asked Johnny.

"I don't mind," Pony said.

"Same," I agreed.

"We could go find Dally?" Suggested Johnny.

"Sure," I agreed.

"Dally? I mean he's a nice kid and all, but Darry says he's a bad influence," Pony explained.

"Come on, we won't get into any trouble," insisted Johnny.

"Alright, where should we go look for him?" Asked Pony.

"Let's try the main street," I suggested.

We walked along the deserted road and came to the main street.

"There he is," I said, pointing to Dally who leaning against a shop front and smoking a cigarette.

"Hey, Dal," I greeted as we arrived.

"Oh hey, what's up?" Asked Dally as he took his cigarette out of his mouth.

"Can I have one?" I asked.

Dally nodded and passed me a cigarette, I put it in my mouth,  took my lighter out of my back pocket and lit it.

"We were bored and we wanted to find you, you usually make things less boring," said Johnny.

"You're right about that, we could go rack a drugstore?" Suggested Dally.

"I don't know, Dal. I can't be getting into any police trouble," Pony said cautiously.

"Don't worry, I'll make sure you three are fine," Dally said. "Let's go."

We walked down the street and came to one of the drugstores, the four of us then walked inside.

I headed over to the magazine section, the ones here were shit. I liked the teen magazines, you know, the ones with advice columns, makeup looks, fashion, things like that. Here they just had the ones kids don't care about, the recipe ones, men's and woman's health, magazines about being a handyman, crap like that. I left the magazine section and went over to the cosmetics.

I grabbed three tubes of lipgloss and headed over to Pony, who was looking at the books.

"The Faraway Tree," Pony said. "Sounds interesting."

Pony picked up and book and we went over to Dallas and Johnny who were admiring the cigarettes.

Dallas took three packs of cigarettes and stuffed them into his jacket pocket, followed by Johnny taking some hair grease off the shelf.

I pulled off the fluoro orange barcode on each lipgloss and stuffed them into the back pocket of my jeans. Pony put the book under his hoodie.

"Good afternoon," Dallas said to the cashier.

The three of us snickered at his fake manners as we headed for the door.

I jumped as the alarm went off.

"Oh no!" Groaned Johnny. "I forgot to rip the barcode off!"

The store worker came over with a gun, pointing it at us.

"Get to the back of the store, now!" He snapped, not aware of what our true intentions were.

We followed him to the back room and he gestured for us to sit at the table.

"The police will be arriving soon," he said calmly.

I rolled my eyes. How could Johnny forget something so important? It was the only thing we needed to do! Now we're all in shit! Dallas looked the most pissed. His face had gone red and he was tensing his clenched wrist so hard it looked like he was about to kill someone.

"Alright, you four. Into the car, now!" A cop shouted.

He had just walked into the room.

He handcuffed us all and we got into the back of the police car.

"You ever do something stupid like that again and I'll kill you!" Dallas hissed at Johnny.

When we got to the station, my parents were already there, along with Pony's parents and Johnny's Dad.

"Everyone in the back room!" Ordered the cop.

Dallas, Johnny, Pony and our parents went into the back room and sat down. The cop left and another one came back.

"Good evening, I'm Sargent Connors," the cop greeted. "What's been going on? Honest is the most sensible thing to be right now."

"I robbed a drugstore. It wasn't even them, man. They were with me and they didn't know I was going to be stealing," Dally explained.

"Well young man, thank you for being honest. I'm afraid you'll be going back into the detention center for this, your third time in there I believe. You have a minute alone with your friends," said Sargent Peters.

Then all the adults left.

"You three have a clean record. You get mean in jail, and I don't wanna see it happening to you guys, man. Tell your parents it was me, don't get into any more trouble. Don't make the same mistake I did, I want you guys to have parents who aren't mad at you all the time," Dally told us.

The adults came back in.

"You made bail, Mr. Winston," Sargent Connors began, gesturing to Pony and my parents.
