Ponyboy's P.O.V.
I woke up the next morning wrapped in Soda's arms. It was warm under the covers but I knew I had to get up. Summer had just begun so we were free from school for a few months. I'm hoping that I can just relax this summer, do my holiday homework, and hang out with my friends.
I felt the cold air hit me as I got out of bed. The warm weather hadn't really kicked in yet. I went into the bathroom and got into the shower straight away. I turned the tap over to hot and got in.
The first one up has to fix breakfast. I usually wake up first because if I don't, I end up with Soda's fried eggs covered in grape jelly or a cold shower since Darry uses up all the hot water. I don't mind cooking either.
I loved Charlie. With all my heart. And I knew I loved her before, but that was as my best friend. I love her in a different way now, I've never felt this way before! At least I'm pretty sure that this is a romantic love, the kind in the movies I watch. Except I'm not acting, this is real. I think I've felt this way for a while, I just didn't admit it to myself. Well, now I can't help it, When my parents died, I felt like my heart was breaking into a million pieces, but when Charlie was with me, it felt like it was glued together again. That's how Charlie made me feel. After everything that I've been through, like losing my parents and growing up a poor Greaser with Darry raising me, it's like she can fix it all like she can fill the empty part of my heart that has never felt love. I mean she probably does love me back, probably just as a friend. I'm not going to tell her yet, I don't want to take any risks and ruin our friendship. I'm fourteen, should I really be feeling this way? I mean there are a few couples in our year, and in the younger school years too. But I guess I'll have to wait for the right time if I ever want to tell her.
Cold water hit me out of my thoughts as I realized the hot water had run out. I stepped out of the shower, dried off and got dressed. Then I greased my hair and put my socks and shoes on. No one else was up yet seeing it was still early.
I went into the kitchen, got out six eggs, two for each of us, and put them on a frying pan. At that moment, I heard the front door swing open, and two pairs of feet raced into the kitchen. It was Charlie and Johnny.
"Hey, Ponyboy," said Charlie.
"Hey," I said with a smile, admiring her face.
Her lips were light pink and luscious, her big, bright eyes seemed to sparkle as I looked into them. Her hair fell down her back and her smile seemed to take me away from earth.
"Pony!" Charlie said with a laugh.
"What's wrong?" She asked.
"What?" I questioned. "Nothing."
"You were staring at her for like five minutes, man!" Said Johnny.
"Is there something on my face?" Asked Charlie, picking up a small hand mirror from the table.
"No, sorry. Just got lost in thoughts. I'm kinda tired. Anyway, you know you two are always welcome here. Can I get you guys some breakfast?" I said.
"Sure," said Johnny.
I cracked some more eggs into the frying pan and took the other ones off, putting them on a plate then on the table for Soda and Darry to find later.
"So what are you guys doing here this early?" I asked as I flipped their eggs over.
"We slept in the lot, a pickup truck woke us up and we couldn't get back to sleep," said Johnny.
"Why were you sleeping in the lot?" I asked, serving up their eggs.
