As the party went on into the night we heard a knock at the door. Darry went over to answer it. Two cops stood there, looking grim.

"Hello, I'm Officer Peterson and this is Officer Waites," one of them said as Soda turned the music off.

"What are you doing here?" Darry asked.

"Mind if we come in?" Officer Peterson asked.

"Sure," agreed Darry.

"We only want the Curtis kids and the Bailey kid. The rest of you, go on home," said Officer Waites.

"We'll be at the lot," Johnny said.

"You four, sit down," said Officer Waites.

The four of us took a seat on the couch.

"What's up?" Asked Soda.

"Listen," Officer Peterson said, taking off his hat. "Your parents were all in the same car, driving out to eat dinner at a restaurant. Unfortunately, they never made it to the restaurant. Their car stopped at a red light, and a truck came zooming through and crashed into them. The four of them were killed instantly by the impact damage. I'm awfully sorry for your losses, kids."

All of a sudden, I felt empty. Like all the good was gone from the world. My mother, my beautiful mother, gone. My father, I know he loved me, he just had a funny way of showing it, gone too. My parents, gone. What did I even have left? Then it came to me. I had the gang. They would always be here for me. I had Pony too. My best friend. I could count on him.

Darry pulled us into a tight hug. We were all crying.

"I've arranged for you to stay here for a while until we find a home for you to stay in," said Peterson.

"So I might be put into a girls home or something?" I panicked.

"Yes, you don't have any relatives in Tulsa, unless we can find a relative you can move out to live with then you'll have to move into a home," said Waites.

"She can't move! Can't she just live with us?" Pony asked.

"The court is considering letting Darrel raise you two, his brothers since he's over eighteen. But it's not legal for him to raise someone he's not related to, seeing that he's under twenty-one," explained Peterson.

"I'll bring over the papers for you to sign in the next few days Darrel if you want to raise them. You sign the papers to take custody of them, and Sodapop and Ponyboy, you must sign them to allow Darrel to have custody of you two. But Darrel, you're welcome to work your way through college and your brothers can move into a boys home," said Peterson.

"No. They're my brothers," said Darry. "Of course I'll look after them. It's not even a question."

"Alright, and Miss Bailey, your parents left you everything in their Will. Legally, the house is yours, but you're too young to own a house. It's been paid off, so you can hand it over to someone who's eighteen or over," said Waites.

"Alright. Darry can have it. He can sell it and use the money to help Ponyboy and Sodapop," I said.

"No, kiddo," Darry stopped me. "You don't have to do that."

"I'll let you think it over. We'll be looking for some relatives for you, Miss Bailey. And the custody forms will be bought over soon," said Peterson, both cops getting up. "Goodnight."

And they left.

"What're we gonna do? Charlie, you can't move!" Cried Pony, leaning his head on my shoulder.

"It will be okay," I said, putting my arm around him.

He cried into my shoulder.

"Calm down, Pony. It's gonna be alright," I told him.
