1965
Yesterday was my birthday, I just turned sixteen. Pony's is tomorrow. Mine's on the twentieth and Pony's is on the twenty-second. So on the twenty-first, we usually celebrate our birthdays together. We usually have a party with the rest of the gang or just hang out together. Pony is coming around seven thirty tonight and we're going to go out somewhere, we aren't sure where yet. I walked out to the kitchen to see my parents sitting there, breakfast already made. I sat down in my usual spot and took a piece of toast and some bacon.
"Good morning, dear," greeted my Mum.
"Good morning," I said.
Dad was too interested in his paper to notice me.
I poured some milk into a glass.
"So what do you and Ponyboy have planned for today?" Asked Mum.
"I'm not sure yet," I replied, taking a bite of a piece of toast.
"Do you want to go shopping with me after breakfast?" Asked Mum. "We can get something for Ponyboy while we're there."
"Sounds good Mum," I said. "Are you gonna come, Dad?"
"Sorry, can't. I'm going to a rodeo with John," he replied.
Dad was always going to rodeos with Steve's dad and getting drunk.
"Are you finished?" Mum asked.
I took the last bite of my toast. "Yep."
"I'll go get my purse and we'll go," said Mum.
Mum came back with her handbag and we got into the car and drove over to the mall.
"Any idea what you want to get Ponyboy?" Mum asked.
"Something creative," I said.
"Let's go to the art store," Mum said. "How about an easel and canvas?"
"He's not really into painting," I replied.
I showed my mum a set of sketching pencils.
"Can I get him these?" I asked.
"Pick something else too," said Mum.
"Not from here," I said.
Mum nodded and we went over to the cash register to pay for the pencils.
"Where to now?" Asked Mum.
I thought for a while.
"The bookstore," I said.
I love reading. Pony and I love reading to each other. We usually get books from the library because he can't really afford books. They're really expensive.
I picked out Beauty and the Beast for him. After that we had lunch in the food court.
When we got home, I set to work on my card for Ponyboy.
I took a piece of poster paper then folded it in half. On the front, I drew a picture of Pony. I wrote a message inside and put the card in an envelope. It was almost time for Pony to come over so decided to get ready to go out.
When I was done getting ready I went into the living room and saw Mum and Dad sitting there.
They were all dressed up.
"Why are you guys dressed up?" I asked.
"We're going out for dinner, so we'll give you a ride to the Curtis house," said Mum. "Let's go."
We all went into the car and continued along the familiar drive to Pony's house.
When we arrived, it looked like no one was home. Pony's parents were in the front yard with him.
"Hey, Charlie," Pony said.
"Is everything still going as planned?" asked Pony's dad.
"Yes," Mum confirmed.
"Let's go inside," said Pony's mum.
The six of us made our way over to the door.
Pony opened it.
All the lights were off.
"SUPRISE!" Shouted a group of people.
It was the rest of the gang. Two-Bit, Dally, Steve, Darry, Soda, and Johnny.
"Is this a surprise party?" Asked Pony.
"You bet, kid," Two-Bit said.
"We organized it. The four of us are going to leave you all here while we go out to dinner," said Pony's mum.
When he was sure the adults were gone, Two-Bit yelled "NO ADULTS!"
"Let's sit down and give the presents," said Darry. "Charlie first."
The whole gang got Pony and me gifts. Two-Bit got me a whoopee cushion, Dallas got me a vending machine ring, Steve got me a hubcap with his signature on it, because, you know, he's a big star. Darry bought me a set of colored pencils, Soda got me a pretty, blue hair bow, and Johnny got me six pack of coke.
I thanked them and after Pony received his gifts he pulled me over into a corner as the party started.
"I want to give you your gift now," he said, passing me a blue box with a white ribbon around it.
I pulled the ribbon off to reveal another small box. I opened it. It was a pair of Ruby earrings.
"Thanks, Ponyboy. They're beautiful," I said kindly and a hugged him.
"You're welcome," he said.
"I have to give you my gift," I explained.
He opened it and a look of happiness took over his face.
"Wow! Thanks so much, Charlie!" he said.
"You're welcome," I answered.
"We should all go somewhere later and do something that's fun around town after the party is over," said Dally.
Pony and I went back to the party. It was great. We're all having fun together. Even though it was just music, decorations and food, we had each other, and that's what made it fun.
so from now on, no more time skips, just normal story :)
