I had my last class of the day with Luke, so he and I waited for Pony after school so we could go hang out at Luke's house.
"Why's he taking so long?" Luke asked.
"No idea," I said with a shrug.
Just as I said this Ponyboy came running towards us.
"We know you're the fastest in the school!" I teased.
"Listen," began Ponyboy. "Each cheerleader is allowed to have a partner on the football or the track team."
"So?" Questioned Luke.
"So, that means if Charlie was my partner she'd get to make an individual cheer for me, we'd get to do a lot more stuff together at school," Pony explained.
"How do they decide the partners?" Asked Luke.
"You choose them yourself," Pony said.
"And what if there's an uneven number of boys or girls?" Luke asked.
"The teams work out evenly anyway, there's the same amount of boys on a football team as there are girls in a cheer squad," I told him
"Oh, okay. That sounds cool," Luke said. "You guys ready to go?"
"Yep," Ponyboy said, swinging his backpack over his shoulder and taking my hand as we walked.
"Guys, who's that Emma girl in our english class?" Asked Luke.
"She's so sweet. I've known her since kindergarten," I told him.
"Is she trying out for the cheer squad?" Luke asked.
"Yeah I was with her at the practice," I told him.
"I want to ask her to be my partner," Luke said. "Reckon she'll say yes?"
"Sure," Ponyboy agreed. "Unless someone beats you to it."
"Charlie, I need you to tell me as soon as possible if she's on the team, okay?" Luke demanded.
"Of course I will," I laughed.
"Thank you," Luke said with relief. "Well, here's my car!"
"Wow!" Ponyboy said in awe.
He had a shiny red T-Bird, it was beautiful.
"Who's sitting in the front?" Asked Luke.
I called it and Pony got into the back and we drove to Luke's house.
We passed our area, past the center of town and towards the West side.
"You live on the West side?" I asked, suprised.
"Yeah, why?" Luke asked.
"It's just that we don't usually get along with people from the West Side," I told him.
"Does it really matter where we come from? I mean we're all people," Luke observed.
"That's very true, but not what I meant," I said.
"The Socs live on the West Side. They love to jump us," explained Pony.
"I'm nothing like that," Luke said in defense.
"We know," I said.
"That's part of the reason we like you," Pony finished.
The car came to a stop in the drive way of a large white house, with a Mustang and a Chevrolet parked out the front. It had a fountain and marble podiums holding up the roof of the front porch.
