Chapter 12
Wolves
(Anna's PoV)The wind whipped my hair. It felt great to finally be doing something outside. "We like to go fast," Kristoff said.
I leaned back and put my feet up. "I like fast," I say.
"Woah, woah!" Kristoff yells at me, "are you kidding me? This is fresh lacquer. What, were you raised in a barn?" he spits at the place where my feet were and some spit hits me in the face.
"No," I say while wiping the spit off my face, "I was raised in a castle."
When he finishes he sits back up and asks me, "So, what made the Queen go all ice crazy?"
I sigh, "Oh well, it was all my fault. I got engaged, but then she freaked out because I'd only just met him, you know that day, and she said she wouldn't bless the marriage and..."
"Wait," Kristoff interrupts me, "you got engaged to someone you just met that day?"
"Yeah. Anyway I got mad and so she got mad and then she stormed off..."
Then Kristoff turns to me and interrupts me again, "Hang on, you mean to tell me you got engaged to someone you just met that day?"
"Yes, pay attention, but the thing is she just showed up in our courtyard right after, so I just thought, maybe was over it..."
"Didn't your parents ever warn you about strangers?"
I look at Kristoff then scoot away from him. "Yes they did. But Hans is not a stranger."
"Oh yeah, what's his last name?"
I roll my eyes, "Of-the-Southern-Isles."
"What's his favorite food?"
"Sandwiches."
"Best friends name?"
"Probably John."
"Eye color?"
"Dreamy."
"Foot size?"
"Foot size doesn't matter."
"Have you even had a meal with him yet? What if you don't like the way he eats? What if you don't like the way he picks his nose?"
"Picks his nose!"
"And eats it."
I am just... I don't even know how to describe how I feel about him right now. "Excuse me, sir, he is a prince."
Kristoff sits back and looks ahead. "All men do it."
"Ewww," I say, "Whatever! It's true love!"
"Doesn't sound like true love."
"And, what, you're some sort of love expert?"
Kristoff hesitates, "No. But I have friends who are."
Then Kristoff all of a sudden looks away. "Oh really?" I say to him.
"Shhh," he says, "stop talking."
I don't stop talking, "No I wanna meet these 'Love Experts'."
"Seriously, stop talking." He puts his hand over my mouth and I force it away.
I open my mouth to say something else when I hear a twig snap. Kristoff and I look behind us and see eyes. Then a pack of wolves appears out of the darkness.
"Sven, go!" he says and Sven begins running again. Then the wolves begin to follow. The sleigh jerks around. Kristoff reaches back in the sleigh and grabs an unlit torch.
"What do we do?" I yell at him as he lights the torch with the lantern. "I got this!" he says as he kicks a wolf away from the sleigh, "Just don't fall off and don't get eaten!"
I lean into the back to find something to keep the wolves away. "But I wanna help!" I yell.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because I don't trust your judgement."
"Excuse me!" I yell at him as I stand back up.
"Who marries a man," he pauses to kick a wolf away, "they just met!"
I find a lute in the back and bring it up ready to swing. "It's true love!" I yell at him and swing the lute. It hits a wolf right in the face.
"Woah," he says and then a wolf grabs him pulling him off the slay.
"Christopher!" I yell at him. He grabbed a rope as he fell off so he is just being pulled by the sleigh. The wolves are right behind him trying to bite him.
"It's Kristoff!" he yells back. Who has time for this? I think. I pick up the torch and light a roll of some kind of supplies on fire. Picking it up I throw it at the wolves.
They run away and I grab the rope Kristoff is hanging on to. "You could have killed me!" he yells at me.
"But I didn't!" I pull him onto the sleigh. Then we look ahead to see a huge drop off. "Jump Sven!" I yell.
"You don't tell him what to do," Kristoff says to me. Then he picks me up and puts some supplies in my lap. "I do!" he then throws me into Sven. "Jump Sven." Kristoff says as he cuts Sven away from the sleigh.
Then Sven jumps. I close my eyes thinking we aren't going to make it. Then Sven thuds on the ground.
(Kristoff's PoV)
The sleigh flies through the air but begins to fall. I jump. I can make it! I think. I hit the side. Snow gets all over my face. I look down at my sleigh now broken in pieces at the bottom of the drop off. Suddenly it bursts into flames. "Aww," I sigh, "but I just paid it off."I feel the snow shift under my hands. I begin slipping. "No, no, no!" I yell. Something lands in front of my face. The pick axe! "Grab on!" I hear Anna yell. I grab it and she pulls me.
When I'm at her and Sven's feet I roll over on my back. Anna looks down at the burning wreckage. "Woah," she says. "I replace your sleigh and everything on it." She says to me. "And I understand if you don't want to help me anymore." Then she walks away.
I turn to Sven. "Of course I don't want to help her anymore. Actually this has ruined me ever helping anyone again." Sven frowns and I read his expression.
"But she could die on her own," I say in Sven's voice, "I could live with that." I say in my own.
"But you won't get your new sleigh if she's dead." I say in his voice. Then I frown at him. "Sometimes I really don't like you. Hold up!" I yell to Anna. "We're coming." Sven runs over to Anna and I try getting up.
"You are!" Anna says, obviously thrilled. "I mean, you can tag along." I roll my eyes. This is going to be a long trip.
