[ 12 ]

I found Kyle sitting on top of the bed with his shoulders hunched and eyes still droopy from his sleep as soon as I entered the door. His gaze abruptly fall unto me when he heard the door open. Confusion and surprise covered his face as he looked me over. His gaze shifted to look at Rhax who is probably standing behind me, then came back to stare at me.

Slowly, his grogginess disappeared as recognition flooded his face. His eyes immediately bulged and fear mirrored on his eyes. Kyle pushed his legs and moved far away from us and to the side of the bed.

"Y-You... Wolves... I... R-Reign..." he stuttered. He looks like he's about to run off any second.

"Kyle, calm down. It's okay. It's just me. Reign," I told him as I slowly inch my way towards him.

"N-No! Don't go near. P-please," he said. Fear was clearly visible in his voice.

My heart lurched at the possibility of my mate fearing me.

"I won't hurt you, Kyle. I promise," I muttered, trying to look directly in his eyes.

I continued to come near him, to just reach out and tell him that I would never hurt him because he's my mate and I couldn't live without him.

His heavy breathing slowed down a bit but gasped when I tried to lift my arm.

"It's okay. Just calm down and listen to what I have to say. Please, Kyle?"

"Y-You won't h-hurt me?" he said and it was like a hand squeezed my heart as I looked at his fearful face.

"I would never hurt you," I told him with all the sincerity I could muster.

I reached the bed and sat down slowly, still cautious of his reaction. When he hadn't made any further movement, I inched more towards him.

He flinched when I touched his hand but I didn't stop and he didn't pull away.

"Don't be scared. We're not gonna hurt you. I won't let anyone hurt you, Kyle," I assured him further.

"H-How could I not be scared?! You... You were a wolf! And you... Oh God. I'm going crazy, aren't I?" He started to get defensive and flustered. "And where am I? Why did you take me here?" He asked as he looked around the room.

"No, Kyle. You're not crazy. I... I'm sorry for scaring you. I didn't mean any of those to happen," I struggled to explain to him what really happened but I couldn't get the words out of my mouth.

"You're at Reign's house. We brought you here after you... Well, after you fainted in the woods," Rhax said. I smiled at him, grateful for him being here.

Kyle's head snapped to Rhax direction. "And you! I... I saw you run to the woods. And... You were gone. Then you... A wolf. How did that happen?" He asked himself. He then looked at me and asked, "Please tell me it was all just a dream, Reign."

I looked at Rhax for support but he just shrugged. "I'm sorry, Reign. He's your mate after all," he said and I glared at him for saying it out loud.

"Mate? What mate? What are you talking about?" Kyle asked almost panicking.

I glared at Rhax harder. "Shut up! You just have to say it, don't you?" I told him through our mind link.

His eyes bulged in fear at the obvious anger in my voice. He raised both his hands in surrender and said, "I'm sorry. It just slipped. I'm really sorry, Reign. Don't be mad."

He looked really scared it's almost funny. I mean, of course I'd be mad! I'm panicking here. I don't even know how to start explaining to Kyle about me being wolf and he just blurted out about us being mate. Just great.

"Reign? What's he talking about? What mate?" Kyle asked me.

"It's okay, Kyle. I'll explain everything. Just... Rhax, do you mind?" I turned towards Rhax to ask him to leave.

"Are you sure you can do it?" He finally asked through the mind link. Well, about time. I don't need his insensitiveness right now.

"Yeah. I'll handle it," I smiled at him and turned to Kyle. I heard the door close behind us.

"Reign? Wha-what's happening?" Kyle gulped as he stared at me. "What was he talking about?"

"Kyle... It's pretty complicated and... I... I don't want to scare you or anything..." My voice was growing softer and softer as I speak the words.

"Dammit, Reign! Just tell me!" I flinched at the rising urgency and desperation of his voice.

"Okay. But I want you to listen to me carefully. Don't ask any questions or make side comments yet until I've finished. Alright, Kyle?"

His eyes bulged but nodded his head yes nonetheless.

"Promise me you won't freak out! Okay, you can freak out a little bit but you have to understand where I'm coming from. Okay? You promise!"

I know I don't really have the right to demand him anything but I just want him to at least give me a chance. To prove to him that I-- I mean we, mean no harm and that it will never be my intention to harm him in any way.

He gulped hard and said, "I p-promise, Reign."
